Re: Intro and Update: Slugmobile and Mean Mini! (long read, but worth it)
MeanMini update:
Well, believe it or not i overlooked modifying my Talon bov for a while. I could not remember at what pressure in the normal configuration they were good for before they started to lift and bleed boost.
Since getting the car back from the engine rebuild, that has been on the back burner and sort of forgotten.
It was probably a bit acceptable last year, since the boost creep was so bad. However now with boost regulation in check we can no longer allow the bov to bleed boost.
So i modified a spare bov similar to the same common process.
I tapped the port on the flange side and installed an allen plug/setscrew with thread sealer.
I drilled into the port passage and installed a brass barb nipple (i've got a v-notch in the end pressed into the drilled hole which will allow boost to the bottom of the diaphragm ).
Since this turbo does not have a boost source nipple on the compressor housing, and i don't have any port on my intercooler plumbing either i had a bit of a conundrum. I decided to test using the large nipple on the TB, since that one is ported to just before the butterfly valve.
It may not be perfect, but it is working and does have quick release.
I have a idea in mind to try modifying another bov to still use the flange port as the boost source. This would all be unneccesary if i had a boost port on the turbo outlet.
For the control, i am switching the solenoid via a pressure switch.
The change should be an improvement as i push closer (and over 20psi). Mini's current record run had an average of 20.x psi of boost.
And the best run so far this year has been 13.05@101.6 at an average of 15.7 psi boost.
This just sounds so odd when you realize Gus' record in the van was 13.1 or 13.2? at 101/102 but running 27.5 psi boost!
I can't wait to see what running 27.5 psi boost with the current engine will produce! I'm definitely going to need a suitable radiator to do that!
Hoping to test&tune this coming Sunday, but unlike previous attempts the ambient temps will be in the mid 80's now.

If I remember right, I was with Gus at New England Dragway when he ran 13.18
which I think was his best e.t.

I probably have a copy of the slip from Gus' racing binder. But would have to look for it. Nothing is where i left things anymore since getting married!

MeanMini update.
I spent some time yesterday modifying a 1g Talon bov to install.
As you can see here, i drilled a port in the flange to intercept the stock boost port to the bottom of the diaphragm.
Attachment 58371
The stock boost port was drilled out and tapped M6 x 1.0. And a second port was drilled into this stock boost port.
Attachment 58372
A plug was installed in the stock boost port, effectively separating the two additional ports i drilled.
In those ports i installed barbed nipples. And of course, no bov mod is complete without the use of JB Weld!
Attachment 58373
So when installing this today i decided to use this new "turbo outlet boost port" to tee in the existing MBC circuit and shorten up some tubing. The quick release bov is accomplished with an original Gus pressure switch powered by the high boost solenoid switch.
Attachment 58374
Attachment 58375
And, since i was cleaning up some vac/boost lines, i figured i'd finally fix my "temporary" installed lines. Guess i can't really call it temporary if I've had it like this for over a year... This is a much better first impression.

Re: Intro and Update: Slugmobile and Mean Mini! (long read, but worth it)
MeanMini made it to SDAC26 this year, and due to deciding at the last minute to throw in the CSR electric water pump despite its inherent issues, we trailered her out on a dolly. The 3.6 Pentastar powered Grand Cherokee did a nice job pulling her out there.
Anyway at the drags, i was able to make 6 passes. 2 were matched up against Brian Slowe in his Shadow BSX, first for Quick8 qualifying, and then for the 1st round of Quick8.
Mini's 5th and 6th runs were in the brackets, and were her best times of the day with a best of the day 6th run 12.86 @ 103.
I've identified a few more items i want to address.
I've converted my logs of those runs to .csv files and have them viewable here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?...Ek&usp=sharing
I have the timeslips here:
Attachment 58801
Attachment 58802
One thing you'll see in the logs is being very rich. And since there were no timing retard events, there is certainly room to improve the spark tables. Everyting is set super safe while i work through the cooling system/radiator issues.
I would like to talk to some folks about the possibility of a different electric pump option. But it would require someone to machine a plate to bolt to our stock water pump housing.
I still need to continue to work with the fresh "back to the drawing board" cal that Rob Mercer and Jeff C. were helping work through some base setup stuff. Once i get some time (we are busy at work with planned annual msintenace shutdown) i'll try to get some of the new cal tested.
I've got the quote back for the custom radiator snd i nearly pooped myself. They want $1783 for the radiator, shroud, and fan. Geez. I need to rethink that. That was from Ron Davis Radiators.

Hey Wayne, sounds like you are doing well!!
Your Talon BOV mod reminds me of the last diagram on Gus's page about BOV's.
He shows how to make a plastic BOV live under high boost and I copied his diagram faithfully.
All I could get at the time was a Bosch?? that he recommended until I could scare up a Talon unit.
That was almost 20 yrs ago at 24 PSI and the plastic unit never gave a problem and the Talon one is still in the box.
Every time I open my hood I think of Gus!!!
Thanks
Randy

Thanks Randy. She is getting there slowly. I wish i had more spare time, now with being married it isn't as easy to spend all the time i want doing car stuff.
I have been dealing with some setbacks with learning to do cals, as well as the cooling issues.
I don't like to make too many changes at the track, so the only changes i made at SDAC was to try to bump up my rev limiter back (i had lowered it during cooling system troubleshooting ), and raising boost. For the last run i did bump my cam timing a bit as a test. I tried advancing it what would be 1 graduation on the cam gear (2°?). I wanted to see if it would help pull a bit better after the shift, and a bit less at the top. Next time out i might fiddle with that more.
I could have also tried bumping up my staging limiter. Right now i launch at like 3200rpm. I'm cutting 1.9's and i know it will get better with harder launches.
There's a lot left in this setup. We are still just scratching the surface here i believe.
I may again look into that aftermarket wastegate actuator or readjusting my actuator spring tension to try and hold more consistently with the boost.
I'm going to see what i can get worked out before Cecil in Nov. I hope to be running better then.
Oh and Happy Canada Day my friend!

Why 2 ports on the BOV that essentially do the same thing?? I'm not following there.

They don't do the same thing.
There is a plug in between the two.
The port now drilled through the outside of the mounting flange is the boost source (turbo outlet/intercooler piping - pre throttle body).
The other port is to the bottom of the diaphragm for venting under high boost and providing the quick lift feature (when the solenoid switches back from venting under high boost to sending boost to the bottom of the diaphragm ).
The point of the two ports was i needed to figure out how to get a turbo outlet pre-TB boost source. I didn't want to drill into my intercooler pipes, and the compressor housing did not have a nipple either.

Thanks AJ! I was hoping it would be clear enough to see the gauge readings during the run, but i will have to set up the gopro closer to get a better recording of the gauge activity.

Mr. Joe Manduno is the current world champ as far as we know with his 11.75@115.
According to www.dragtimes.com
He bested Terry Ryan's previous record of 11.760@115+
His title and record are safe, for now. Fayeteville got rained out today. And i just drove back from a 3+hr roundtrip to go to a different track I've never raced at, only to find out they just race 1/8 mile!
I'll try to race Sunday 27th if they race at Fayetteville.
And the only change for the first run will be get this - Have More Fuel in the tank!
My goal for this year was to break my record at Cecil and to have MeanMini run in the 11's (11's were not however my intent when rebuilding her). So i have done that.
If i can't pull it all together and break my own record, or the existing world record, this year I'll still be happy with Mini's progress.
I need to call Gus' wife and daughter and tell them the good news!

Congrats again Wayne!!
Was Joe running N2O on the 11.75 run?

Yes. He said 150hp shot according to his posted details.
And Terry sprayed a 50hp shot during his record run.
I think MeanMini is the fastest no-nitrous turbo minivan. (As far as ours go, not sure about other brands obviously.)
She reclaims her title that she held for 10 years, 1990-1999 according to:
