If they are cracked then its between ring lands
That's where they almost ALWAYS break
If you see detonation damage on the top of the piston then it's GUARANTEED to have broken ringlands too. If you dont see damage on the top then it is just LIKELY to have broken ringlands. :p

If it's your lucky day though, they're just really welded in with carbon... sometimes that stuff is tenacious, had some on exhaust valves and the difference between soaking it in solvent and not was granite vs hard coal, i.e. became possible to scrape (rather than grind) off... nothing was gonna just rinse it off there.
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
The only luck I have is bad luck. So I'm screwed
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
Got the garage cleaned up the car pulled in and the head pulled off the car. Don't see any scoring in the bores or anything like no cracks I can see from the tops. Pulling the pistons tomorrow and see what I find and do some measuring

Both 3 and 4 cracked around ring lands

Finally got a chance to measure. Here is what I got. Think I'm good with a hone and some new slugs?[URL=http://s268.photobucket.com/user/bgbmxer/media/imagejpg1-18.jpg.html]http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...agejpg1-18.jpg[/URL
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
Seems barely worn at all to me, but I'm going by the old rule of thumb of 0.010 inch
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
Cylinder 2 seems like the worst out of round wise.
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
Cylinder 2 had the same compression as #1. 3 and 4 were the cracked ones. Thinking I should run it. But want to find what the spec is for the bores.
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
What I've got in the '90 FSM for service limit is 0.002" out of round and 0.005" for taper, doesn't give a fine tolerance for overall just says 3.44/3.45
But anyway, sounds a bit borderline on the roundness, depends how long you want not to have to mess with it for, if you want it good "forever" bore it, if 50,000 miles is good enough, don't.

this is what I was thinking. That I can hone it and will be fine for a good while. Especially since I'd beat the crap out of it anyways. Cars that are beat on tend not to last forever.
it was very hard to measure the bores. I would measure it 3 different times and get 3 different measurements. Could have averaged them I guess. Good micrometer and bad bore gauges lol.
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
What's the details on the build? If it's a 2.5 auto, stock-ish to not humungous sized turbo, 2 bar or less, then it's not gonna rev over 5,500ish and it should be okay....er..... but if it's for a manual 2.2 or 16V swap, or big turbo, that's going to be "up there" RPM wise, then you'll feel it get a strange oscillation/wobble at high RPM and that'll be the pistons working side to side and ovalling it out RAPIDLY.
Re: Tons of blowby rings possibly stuck. Ideas....
It's a 2.2 cb in an 88 shadow. The head is a ported swirl with +1 valves super 60 roller. Ported exhaust mani and ported 2piece. Super 60 turbo. 2 bar for now.
