Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
The net seem to be short on info on repair of the old style AIS assembly. Minimopar reminds one to be careful..
I have noticed several say assemble dry, other say to oil the planetary gears ( No one said there are three small gears are different colour!!..take note).
So my question is Oil or no oil?
I will post pics when I am complete

Re: Old style AIS repair, 87 and older
Here is a photo doc of my repair. First I removed the clamp and slowly pull out the motor with slight twisting.

next is a picture of other part with the planetary gears in place. Note the 3 alignment pins on the case of the planetary gear, this aligns with the holes in the motor as a lock to prevent spinning of the case.

Next I removed the planetary gears assembly, note the different colours? The gears are different and the top of the gear as we see it here has four injection marks on top but only two on the other side. Please note the white ring has a small triangle protrusion near the grey gear, if this is not located at this spot the assembly will be off centre during the final assembly.

here are the four injection dots

once all the parts are clean we can start to assemble

place the two ring clip into the groove while pushing down the centre of the assembly. I place the openings of the clip 180 degrees from each other

finally place the valve on the top

Assemble planetary gears as shown on the right. Remember to place the grey gear on the post with the outward triangle on the white ring
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/at...id=54234&stc=1
place the gear assembly on top of the motor
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/at...id=54235&stc=1
now place the valve assembly on top and slowly drop the outer plastic casing from the top. Watch the alignment of the valve as the unit goes together. Secure with clamp and test AIS operation when attached to car connector. After you reconnected your battery turn the ignition on but do not start!, the valve should move. Turn off ignition. Check the quality of the orings and replace if necessary.
Remember to check base idle settings after the AIS is installed.
Now idle works great and the engine is more responsive from an extended stop, like a long light.

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
Very good info I need to do this on my car too!

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
I tried this today on my car, now I have a very high idle. 2500 to 3000 rpm! Either I messed up or the spare iac motor I used is no good, both very possible options.

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
Did you double check the spare motor when it was off with 12V power?
I checked mine with a lab power supply but if you use you battery please use an in line fuse for safety.
Also check the planetary gears are correctly arranged as above. If not the valve will not move.
You may need to disconnect the battery, to tell the ecu to close the AIS as the ignition is turn on without starting.
in order so see the valve move, twist the AIS before you test so you can see the valve turn from the drivers seat. You should see it rotate
Good luck my friend

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
I did not test it but I after taking another one apart today I think I see where I went wrong. Will find out this wknd and update. Thanks for the tips!

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
In addition, you can test the full assembly by applying 12V to the terminals of the AIS, the valve should turn one way. If you switch the polarity at the terminals, the valve will turn the other way. That way you can test on the bench.

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
Took apart the original, cleaned, etc. The idle is down to 2000 rpm now and the car doesn't want to stall when returning to idle off snap throttle so I am getting somewhere!

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
good news. Did you test on the bench to be sure it fully closes and opens? Also did you adjust the base idle?
-
Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
Yes I did bench test it and it worked perfect but I did not set the base idle yet. I will try that tonight.

Re: Old style AIS question, 87 and older T1
Still had ais troubles. Turns out the one I bench tested was jamming up once installed and the other one had a bum motor. I just made one good unit out of two and got base idle at 900 rpm with ais unplugged.

I had to clean the old style AIS again. I really need to switch to the new style complete with two piece manifold and charge cooler.

May as well upgrade to a bigger turbo, that will help out the other pieces... ;)
