bolt in bearings versus press fit
I'm trailering my 85 Town and Country wagon 9 hours to Rob's (Shadow) shop in Manitoba. It has the bolt in front bearings (hubs from a 92 minivan). Do I need to put axles in it (no motor/trans) or are the bearings ok since they are bolt in versus press fit.

Re: bolt in bearings versus press fit
you should put axles in, either kind the bearing gets loose without the axle to hold it together
Re: bolt in bearings versus press fit
Yes. The bearing design itself didn't really change much, just the manner in which it's held into the spindle. It still needs the support of a properly torqued axle stub to keep everything in place while rolling.
Re: bolt in bearings versus press fit
Thanks! I'll put axles in it then.
Re: bolt in bearings versus press fit
Not sure if you left yet,
but you could pull the axles apart,
and simply bolt the outer cup into the bearing.
Then you've got yourself a great excuse to clean and repack the C/Vs :)
Re: bolt in bearings versus press fit
Not gone yet. Loading the car tomorrow. I've been thinking about making a pare of stub axles, or using a big bolt and two big washers.
