90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
It's the TBI LeBaron I fixed up for my Daughter haven't had any real issues with it until the last couple hundred miles. It's stalls at odd times, usually at a stoplight even after fully warmed up. So I was thinking maybe it's the old 'heavy load when the fan kicks on' that kills the motor but not the case, it's fine when the fan kicks on-it's when the fan shuts OFF!? It's done it twice that I can verify. Any ideas what I should chase? Replace the fan relay maybe? Anyone had the same issue?
Re: 90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
Flaky speed distance sensor? Sticky AIS? Any codes?

Re: 90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
The car is a few cities away from me right now, I'll get my Bro to run the codes.
On the suspected MAP sensor, every TM I have (other than Daughters car) is turbo, I know I have some spare MAP sensors around but they are for turbo cars, are they the same? Do I need to source out an NA one to try?
Re: 90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
Heard back from my Bro, just 12 and 55 for codes. Stalled a couple more times today on him. Maybe I'll hit it with a couple tanks of Sea Foam if I can't find an actual componant that's failing:confused2:
Re: 90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
You may already know this and be disregarding the codes because you know hwat they are and why they are therre. 12 is a voltage issue I got it when I had bad battery terminal connections. If you disconnected the battery recently then disregard this code. 55 is just an end of message code and you will always get that.
You may want to check the EGR if the car has one. I'm not sure because chrysler put them on some stuff and not others. My 92 sundance didn't have it but my 93 did. I pulled a 2.5 from an 88 caravelle that did have EGR so I'm not sure if a 90 lebaron had it or not.
Re: 90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
Man I'm all ears to hear if you figure out what your problem is...got a very similar issue with a 92 IROC. Have added extra ground straps, swapped fan relays, wiggled every wire I could think of, and still have an intermittent issue where the engine dies when the radiator fan cycles on.
BTW that LeBaron looks really nice, you've done a great job with it.
Re: 90 TBI LeBaron stalls intermitantly
I had a stalling problem with TBI engine way back when. It would be running fine then die out. It would almost always start right up. I finally found a wire that ran along the back side of the valve cover that had worn through and would periodically ground out on the valve cover, in turn shutting the car off.
A little electrical tape and wire loom fixed the issue.

I worked on this car yesterday, let it run and the fan cycle multiple times. It didn't stall(but it was also in park, more idle speed than Drive right?) but I did notice the fan relay was noisey, heck of a click when it cycled so I swapped it for another which is near silent. I drove to the CaSDAC meeting last night about 75 miles round trip, it never did stall but I'm not declaring it fixed just yet:confused2: I'll look at those wires, 98K miles and everything is pretty toasty behind the VC that's for sure. Thanks for the tip:clap:
