Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
Cam Bolt/Intermediate Shaft Weights
Cam/Intermediate Shaft Bolt and Washer = 77.65g
The bolt is M12 x 1.5 x 50mm
¼” Thick Washer – Beveled (Bellville?)
Washer O.D. 1.220” (about 30mm)
New Never Used Intermediate Shaft w/Key and Fuel Pump Lobe = 1175.45g/41.46oz/2.59lb
New Never Used Intermediate Shaft w/Key and center machined down to 0.775” =
1017.61g/35.89oz/2.24lb
Difference of:
157.84g/5.57oz/0.35lb after machining.
From the Hot Rod 2.2 Complete Review catalog, it says Koffel’s shaft with key weighs 2.5lbs before machining (which is what I got as well) and 1.5lbs after machining. It HAS to be gun drilled to save that much weight?
Used Intermediate Shaft without key but with Fuel Pump Lobe = 1173.45g
From the above, the key should weigh = 2.00g

Koeffel's still exists. Wonder if they kept any notes?

Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
I may be able to put my hands on one out of a Koeffel motor to verify if it is drilled....

Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
Crap, I didn't even think of that! I have a Koeffel motor. I never paid attention to see if there is a intermediate shaft in it or not! Doh!

Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
The one I can check out is at a buddies house so I wont be able to get to it for a few days. I have been dying to get that thing on a stand anyway and check it out lol. I know it has the intermediate shaft in it so we shall see:eyebrows:

OK, so this weekend I looked at the motor and it DOES have an intermediate shaft in it. Uh, that's about as far as I got. Maybe I'll try to pull it out tonight.

Any luck yet?

Blast from the past!
What was the conclusion?

Never pulled it out yet. Kind of forgot until now. Thanks!

Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
How much benefit is there in removing 40% of the material (strength) from that shaft? Unless you're running a dry sump system (Koffel probably did) that thing has to turn the oil pump which could be using 5 or more horsepower and putting that cut down cast iron shaft at risk.

That settles it, God needs you to do this now, it was totally by accident that I stumbled upon this thread ... or was it divine intervention?

Now? :eyebrows:
Mock, Warren's is cut down, drilled and still seems to work fine.

Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
Any weight removed from a car/engine is a good thing...

Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
Ok in the article caption it states the center shaft in the picture is "rifle-drilled" but was too unreliable for the IMSA cars. The shaft in the right hand picture appears to be the same shaft.
-
Re: Intermediate Shaft and Bolt Weights (aka oil pump drive shaft or aux shaft)
digging thru my piles of crap, I discovered I have one of those shafts.

I think they said it twisted which I could see, high rpm for long period's of time using thicker oil.
