Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
odd my retarted rear axle makes no funny sounds, though I don't use mono foam for repairs.
if its not a bushing and a part requires welding, I would just swap out the bad part.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
ya well i did that when i was 17 ,i now have matured and like to find ways to not funk things up i just thought that i wasnt the only one that has had that raddle ,oh and by the way it did it on two of the four shadows ive had . plus the economy is pushing me tofind ways to fix without hurting my pocket but thanks for stating the obvious and waste the of a message
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
If it's rattling some funky foam isn't gonna fix it. Sway bar inside broken?
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
If you can't weld it (if the swaybar is separated) take it to a shop and have it welded. Even a muffler shop could do it.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
take it off and find someone to weld it, or search around the boneyard and hope to find a decent one
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
My Lebaron convertible did it and now my Shadow is doing it. I had a friend weld the Lebaron. I agree you need to find a fab shop or exhaust shop to weld it up.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
thanks for the advice guys
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
My first Daytona ('88) did it. And my friends Daytona ('92) did it. A local dealership likely has a guy around still that has done more of these than he'd ever like to remember. Might want to check at a dealer that has been around a while to see what they want. They're more likely to have experience and are more likely to back the repair. I don't often back the stealership either.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
put a u-bolt (exhaust clamp) around it with a piece of steel to really push it up tight.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
Mine squeeked and rattled. Like many others it was a broken sway bar. I got one of the guys to weld it up for me and box it in while he was at it. Works great, it's stiffer and no more rattles and squeeks :thumb:
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
how will a car's behavior change with the broken bar? My Spirit has a broken bar that was made quiet with u bolts and rubber strips before it became my car. My duster has a good rear bar.
maybe I will consider welding up my Spirits bar if a bad bar promotes understeer.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
Yes, it would increase understear. Just like if you were to remove a rear sway bar or the opposite of adding one. The roll stiffness in the rear is decreased.
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
oh ya it drasticly changes the way it drives .its horrible at high way speeds (70-80) i found a hole axel that is in decent shape ,just gunna swap that in thanks for the info and advice guys
Re: how to fix rear axel on my shadow
Are you guys talking about the torsion bar inside of the main "U" channel? I have a rear axle here that is broken the same way. It appears the welds securing the hollow tube broke free on one end which would cause a lot of rattling while driving. Should be an easy fix but you would likely have to remove the brake/hub/backing plate to access for repair.
I also have a good rear axle here that has the solid tube torsion bar from an '87 Shelby Lancer. By comparison, the broken hollow tube axle is super flimsy compared to the unbroken solid bar axle.
