Rack & Pinion Rebuild Kit
Hi. Have an '86 GLHS. Looking for a good rebuild kit for my rack & pinion. Any kits better than others or are they pretty much the same? Found a Powercraft seal kit - part # 8576 from Advance Auto, which is just the seals and clips.
Are there more comprehensive kits out there that include any more parts, rubber boots, etc? Also, how do I determine if I have a Saginaw or TRW?
Thanks!!
Re: Rack & Pinion Rebuild Kit
Look for a "S" logo on the aluminum housing of your rack. That will mean you have a Saginaw. Never seen a GLHT/GLHS that was a TRW unless it was replaced. However, MP did sell fast ratio TRW L-body racks through their parts catalogs. TRW racks typically have a sheet metal tag riveted to the top of rack.
If your rebuilding because if stiffness when cold, then a rebuild kit will not cure that. If you do have that symptom, it will need to be sleeved, as corrosion has taken place inside steering rack. Machine shop would need to get involved. I paid about an additional $100 on top of the standard rebuild price.
My experience has shone me that rebuilding racks is best left to companies that do this for a living. I once even bought a brand new rack from MP, that leaked badly when installed! Installing a rack and then having it leak is frustrating at best. The company I used, actually will reimburse labor if their rebuilt rack leaks due to their fault.

Re: Rack & Pinion Rebuild Kit
I sent an original rack & pinion out of a GLH Turbo to "Steer and Gear" for rebuilding and they did a great job with quick turnaround.
Re: Rack & Pinion Rebuild Kit
I rebuilt my own rack from my '88 Dodge Caravan with a kit I bought from O'Rielly's. Seemed to be adequate enough. I had to make some special tools to get the job done.
Re: Rack & Pinion Rebuild Kit
Thanks for the replies! My rack is leaking; otherwise working fine, so will get the seal kit.
