Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
I think these pictures were posted in another thread, but thought it would be a good idea to add the information here. This is the DillBlox fuse panel kit that will replace that will replace the stock unit that basically fell apart when I pulled the dash to replace it. Pretty cool stuff. Modular, uses very common terminals and also expandable. Stock position count was about 16 total, but this allows at least 24 with this configuration and as you can see more would fit. It uses the mini fuses, has options for relays and also has blocks for the old style hazard flashers.

Also started taking apart the 525 I got from Ken Soroka. This was something he graciously sold to me with the intent of putting it in the GLHS. Since he passed away almost 2 years ago (I think), I have been thinking about this and getting this project going. Right now I am in the process of disassembling to assess the condition and really just take a look inside, but let me say that it is in great shape! Notice the gears.... :)

Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
You and the 525's..
Was that a Chrysler special or something totally aftermarket from back in the day ? Is that a large spline disc ?

Hahaha no this is a straight cut gear transmission that I believe was used in the team Shelby race cars from the 80s. Cordes probably knows more since he picked it up for me after Ken sold it to me. Can't wait to hear this thing whine.... and then I'll be very ready to not hear it. :)
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
That’s correct. Very, very few made, and allegedly 10s of thousands each for the custom gears to be made.
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
Is 5th also straight cut or regular helical pitched ? Wondering if they started with 'blanks' from new process and then cut them or if they were totally made from scratch.

5th is the same, didn't take the pic because I bundled it with the synchros as one piece to keep it all together.

If it is how the rest of that setup looked, they probably had it made from scratch locally. I hate to say it, but that whole deal looks like it’s a lot more work that I thought based off of initial conversations about it. The flex plate clutch combo will be very interesting to see working.

Eta: not trying to sound negative at all, it’s just that this whole deal is much more special than just some straight cut gears put into a standard case.

Well I don't think the flex plate multi clutch setup is required to make it work though, right? I mean I could run it, but a TU clutch would do the trick.
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
I read somewhere the early 520 transmissions were pretty much 525's in a different case .. with some differences..
(???)
so ..I'm having the thought..if that could be put in a better case ..I would
but I've never taken any of my 520's apart and looked inside as I never had to
..built/fixed lots of 525's though including one "unbreakable one"
the trick was being really tight .. NO bearing clearances.. it ran/idled slow for 1-2 min as things first started to "adjust" themselves inside the trans
installing just the input shaft & testing that I needed the ratchet to turn it..
I didn't have to force it ,but I wasn't going to be able to turn it with my fingers
there's a mod I'd consider ..especially as you have special parts that no one wants to see go fubar
the shift fork rails in the trans, the forks and the little screws that thread into the fork to hold them in position on the rails
EYEAH...those little screws..they thread into the forks.. and have a nub end that locates in a hole in the shift rail..
yeah .. that needs to change ..to a bolt with a longer threaded section ..and a thread cut in the fork AND rail
so..
when you break that little dammed bolt..
power shifting the ump-teen gillion''th..time
cough
you don't blow your trans into the afterlife when that little nub end of the bolt finds it's way to the pinion and ring gear..
makes for a quick case failure at the front secondary shaft bearing..
( that was a 555 btw)
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
Good thoughts there.
I will say that I will not be drag racing thos thing, but do intend to road race the car. Given what I put the stock 525 through before, this one will probably hold up ok. It does have a girdle for the diff and that will for sure help. It would be interesting to see how things would fit in another, stronger case though.
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
Cool to see the gears I heard about! I came here to post the same thing, make it fit in a 520/555 case. that case ever flexes those gears are trashed...
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
curious Q, ....do you know the gear ratios and FD ratio?
and I'm presuming "Team Shelby"likely means that I'm looking at one of those never to be found Shelby 525 LS diff's (?)
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
I can get the gears and count all that out. Unsure of the FD ratio.
I have one of the Shelby LSDs as well, got that from Tim C. when he was selling off Bill Gamalski's (sp?) stash. I actually still have that transmission in tact sitting in my garage. I'd have to confirm, but a local member put that together for me. Doubt he took pics of it though.
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
I could have sworn that the input shaft length as different for that clutch setup. I could have misunderstood or be miss remembering.

Well now I'm going to have to measure the length! Haha I would have not noticed I'd it was too short. I did a quick measurement and it may be off by 1/4-1/2", but I need to probably pull the input shaft on the stock unit I have to see for sure.
Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
Post up the measurement. I have a ton of bare shafts in the basement.

Re: GLHS 937 Restoration Project
Sorry it has taken so long to get a measurement. I got really close with a tape and an 87-88 style 555 input shaft. It’s most likely a hair short of 14”. I think this gear set might be able to go into a 555/520 case and use a quaif. I have t thought a ton about it. But it should probably work.
