Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
Hey all,
So the good news is, I got my engine back together after a blown head gasket and its running well. I was rotating my tires and noticed the rear axle has rusted through and cracked. Does anyone know where I can get a new axel, or am I at the mercy of the junk yards, and if so, what years of minivans will be a direct swap for my 89 turbo van? I will try to post a photo.
Thanks,
Lee

Please post a pic.
Mine rusted and cracked in the middle. I'll have to find the pic.
Used one from a gen2 van, but there is a difference in ebrake cables starting in 90 looks like.
You should be able to swap your brake hardware to the new axle.
I can take some pics of mine in a day or two.

I'm embarrassed to to say, I don't know how to post a photo here. Years ago I used to use photo bucket for either this site or another forum, can't remember which. Is there a way to directly load photos to this site?
Re: Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
Click advanced, then click the paper clip, a new window pops up where you can upload pictures than add them to posts. its backwards as cat/
Re: Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
Hmm, No luck. I clicked "Go Advanced" but no paper clip in sight. I know the attachment paper clip button you are talking about from many other sites. Not sure why it's so difficult. Is there a way I can e-mail it to one of you who knows how to post photos?
Re: Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
You should also be able to scroll down some and click the "manage attachments" button to do the same thing.

no luck with that either. Does my membership status have something to do with this? I used to donate, but haven't in several years.
Re: Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
I'm not sure that it does. I'm not sure who is the go to for image hosting anymore either, so I'm of no help, unfortunately.

I found I could not post pictures until I went back and updated my membership with a payment (I had been inactive on both sites from late 2009 after my 1985 Lebaron was totaled).

Went back to Photo Bucket, and deleted a lot of old photos to upload this the old way!
Re: Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
grab and axle from the junk yard man.
or go to a metal shop and have them make you one from 2x2.

Yes, any idea which years of minivans I can get that axle from?
Or can a shop weld something in/on there?

Just what I mentioned earlier.
Mine was from a 2G, 93 or 94 iirc.
And you'll have to address the ebrake being different as I also mentioned.

Re: Turbo Van Cracked rear axel
any van from 84-95 should be fine. with small changes through out.
any good machine /welding shop should be axle to make you an axle beam as well.

Sorry I did remember your initial post. I guess what I was trying to ask, but wasn't very clear is will a third generation van have the same tube? They are much more plentiful these days at the junk yards.
So do the castings on the two ends of the tube come off? Or do I need to use the castings from the donor car? How difficult is it to remove these parts myself? I'm a pretty decent shade tree mechanic, but never did this job before.

I doubt the 3G will work, as the entire body was redesigned. But I guess you could look.
I don't think the tube will remove from the cast pieces, it is likely welded in. I guess it could be cut out.
The easiest way t remove is probably cut the U bolts holding the rear axle to the leaf springs. Be sure you can get the same size U bolts to replace FIRST.
You'll have to remove brake line hoses, and the ebrake cables.
I helped the junkyard "mechanic" remove the donor axle. But I didn't do the replacement. But you'll see what I mean about the ebrake on the 90+. You might want to get that entire ebrake system, as it is an upgrade from the 89 and older.
