How to set Preload for an LSD install
Hey guys,
Hopefully this video will help shed some light on how to set preload and endplay for your new LSD you may be installing into a transmission. In this video, I installed an OBX LSD into the A520. From what I understand, the basics of how to set the preload and end play of a FWD differential is basically the same. If you are going to attempt to do this, it is NOT as hard as it seems.

Re: How to set Preload for an LSD install
Good to see someone demo the technique.
I do differential setup very rarely, but aren't they supposed to have 'preload' on the bearings (ie. negative endplay.) My memory says 6-10 thousandths preload. So I think you need to add 3 more 5 thousandths shims to properly set the preload. (0.008 + 0.006 = 0.014 0.008 + 0.010 = 0.018)
Also if you are replacing the bearing race, you should do that BEFORE you take your initial measurements. Wear and/or machining differences can throw off the measurements...
Re: How to set Preload for an LSD install
Your target is .006-.012 PLUS the endplay, basically you over shim to take all the endplay AND more which is the preload
I have the book with the shim specs if you want a pic but like said above you need to add 3 more shims

Agreed that 3 more shims is the minumum. With the upper end 0.012 preload (vs my quoted 0.010), for a race setup, I would go with 4 additional shims...
