The Contraption 2013-14-15-16
Edited with current setup:
Forward Motion Enforcer shortblock
Eagle Rods
JE Pistons
Cylinder Head by Steve Menegon
Stainless valves
Crane "18" Camshafts
Custom intake manifold, header, downpipe by Brian Slowe
Precision Gen 1 6262SP ball-bearing turbo
Frozen boost intercooler
With several years of debating what the next engine for the Horizon will be, a few months ago I came to the conclusion that I would be building up a 2.4/automatic drivetrain for it.
Over the past few months I have been gathering parts for it.
Passenger side mount adapter from SRT4OMNI.com
Iggle (Eagle) Rods and JE pistons from Forward Motion. ~ 9:1 compression.
I have a lead on an ATI balancer for a good price, hopefully that will pan out.
Mexican Stratus exhaust manifold
I have a lightly used Super50/Stage3 turbo. Not certain this will be my final choice. I may want to get something newer-tech, but this may suit my goals.
I have a large-plenum intake that was previously used in a Neon. I'm not positive it will fit in the Horizon, but we'll see. I may end up opting for something that puts the throttle body on the passenger side for better plumbing and intercooler options.
Right now, the plan is to run SMEC electronics, with a side-mounted distributor, and maybe someday move to something user-programmable in the future. I'm pretty sure the latest cal for my 2.2 would not have the right ignition curve for the 2.4, so a new cal will be in order.
My goal for the car is to run mid 10's without the bottle.
I'm really looking forward to getting back into the fray. I'm not confident it will be back at the track this year, but possibly next season. I will update this as things progress.

Subscribed! Enjoy the build Mike.
Re: The Contraption 2013-14
Sould run great! Similar to what I am building for my Caravan. Might not be a bad idea to get an oil pump with treated gears as some additional insurance.
Re: The Contraption 2013-14
This should be fun :-)
You starting out with the stratus manifold just a starter with plans to change over to something a little more custom later?

Thanks! I was doing some reading last night about JT's trials and tribulations with oil pump gears and such. I'll have to consult with him and DJ about this as well.

Your recent progress has lit a fire under my ---. I'll admit it.
I think a log manifold will get me where I need to be for now. Still kinda debating whether I should stick with the Stratus manifold and go for an external gate setup like you have, or maybe see about one of those SRT-4 upgrade manifolds with the wastegate port in the manifold itself. It's not going to be a balls-out build, so I don't see the need for a tube header right now.

What are your thoughts for the auto? That race 3speed? Or planning on doing something with a 41TE like in my PT GT?
It will be cool to see your cars up and running again no matter what you decide to power them with!
The Neon 31TH is basically the same trans as the A413. The plan is to transfer the goodies from the older trans into a newer case, including the Peloquin diff.

Looking forward to the updates Mike! You even got a post from -Hoos... that has to mean something.

Heh if you change your mind on the tube header I have an obx like what jt uses laying around.

I knew he had to be lurking in here somewhere!

subscribed..
my build is turning out to be very similar (parts in hand: 86 ghl, srt4 motor, eagle rods, weisco 8.8:1, stage 3 manifold / turbo etc)
still working out the details for
-- trans: seems is the best choice (power/fit/price) a413 (2000/1 neon have an extra clutch pack the allow them to hold more tq (with shift kit), but i like the idea of OD with the 41TE.
-- spark fuel: side mounted distributor seems like the easiest way to go, compared to the mega squirt.

Thanks! I'll keep it in mind. I'm not sure about their fitment in an Lbody tho.

But this 8v stuff is becoming a bit thin. Might be time to get on the boat for a 2.4. I'll let you more up to date and experienced guys work things out, if you don't mind! :D
so the 31TH guts are the same? or just "similar"? Is the LSD the same?
Most stuff is a direct change over. Sometimes the Neon hard parts are a bit beefier actually. If memory serves, most of the hardparts in my 413 have been updated to 31TH stuff.
The differentials swap. Acutally the Peloquin diff that I had been using in the Horizon requires a bearing carrier from a 1998-up 3-speed.

Subscribed, and good luck, I know it will be a runner

When I built my 86 413 I pretty much put everything from a neon 31th into it. Solid ended pinion, 5 pinion planetaries, 4 clutch drums etc.

Looking forward to seeing your progress Mike!
