WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Greetings,
I am having a very difficult time replacing the water pump in my 89 Turbo Caravan 2.5. Apparently I have a rare water pump and housing. The pump that keeps coming in when I order them from NAPA, Rock Auto, Autozone, etc is not the same as what came out of my van. These pumps make my van overheat, and the old one leaks badly. I am told that by replacing the housing, it will work with the new pump I bought. I'd post a photo, but since Photobucket charges now, I can't figure out how to post pictures. Please contact me with what you have.
Thanks,
Lee

Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
The mini van 2.5 used the same pump and housing as any other 89 2.5.
1988 and earlier used a different pump and housing.
The 89 pump pulley is smooth, the 88 pulley has ribs.
At some point after 89 the impeller hub size changed requiring a matching pulley.
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Lee already post pictures on facebook. He got a 88 pump in his 89 block.
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
he needs a common block water pump housing.
im going to dig a bit in my garage this weekend. see what i got. but i think i sold my last one
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Yeah, I looked up the 88 Pump. It is NOT what came out of my car. The van currently has the smooth pulley that the back side of the belt rides on, however, the pump blades ARE different. The 88 pump has sort of a disk that the blades are attached to. Mine has the individual blades, but the point differently than the pumps I am being sold. I'm really at a loss here as to what to do. But I want my van back. Driving my full size cummins around all the time is a pain, and expensive.
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Any part number off the old waterpump?
Here's a new housing, but I have doubt it will fix your issue.

Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
88 and earlier pumps spin in the opposite direction of 89 and later pumps. If you have an 88 pump with an 89 pulley, you're spinning the 88 pump in reverse. It is not designed to flow in reverse and the coolant isn't moving like it should.
88 pump should have a grooved pulley and be driven from the grooved side of the belt.

Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Here's an 89 water pump assembly I have on the shelf.
The pump housing was cleaned, de-burred and repainted. It has a new AC Delco pump.
I also have the correct mounting bolt, mounting bracket and a new alternator isolator.
This was installed on the engine, but never ran. I changed my plan and sold the 2.5 short block.
$150 shipped in the lower 48 United States.

The pump housing that is for sale on Ebay is the same one I have. So I guess my housing is correct. So does it matter that the blade design is different? Maybe there was a lot of air in the system last time I tried to replace the pump and that made it overheat?
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
I found the one I have on Rock Auto. I searched a 91 Turbo Daytona...https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...089525&jsn=432
See how the blades are different from the other one? Is this really enough to matter or did I just have air in the system?

Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
88 and older use a gasket. 89 and newer typically use a rubber seal. The photo I have attached to this post is for an 89 or later.
The 88 and earlier pump will not bolt to an 89 and later housing. The shape is slightly different.
Like I stated in my earlier post 88 and earlier pumps spin clockwise. 89 and later pumps spin counter clockwise.
An 88 pump with an 89 pulley will spin in the wrong direction and not pump coolant correctly....

Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Lee,
Remember, 89 pump is unique as the pulley bolt pattern is narrower than 90+. If you are going to buy a GMB pump, I would suggest going thru rockauto for a 89 pump.
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
Both of those pump blades point in the same direction. The flats are to the right.

Look closer, there are a difference on how the blades are pointed.
Lee tried several non GMB waterpump and didn't work for him. Since GMB pump worked, I would recommend he keep using the GMB pumps.
Re: WTB: Turbo Caravan water pump housing
So I can't believe the slight difference in blade angle would matter that much, especially if you are all using the other style I keep getting sold. If I remember correctly, I installed the new pump and the van overheated. So I swapped back in the existing GMB pump. Is it somewhat normal for there to be a lot of air in the system and hard to get the air out at first with a new pump? Maybe that one new pump was bad and the blades didn't turn when the pulley was being turned?
I'm thinking I should install this new one from NAPA, even though the blades are different.
