Nothing to worry about on the transmission.
I believe the non splined part on OBX has odd "crosshatch" that you could get stuck on if your axle stub volcanoed/expanded at the break. I really don't think its a big deal if you damage this or if the damage scrapes up your next axle (will still break near the splines).
Yes, you can see straight through it with no axles installed.
Saw this today too. Looks like the bearing on the tailshaft housing got a bit of stress.

If you look close, you can see the splines down in there and the broken axle centerdrill mark.

This puts my SDAC attendance in jeopardy, and maybe even DragWeek . Lots of other stuff going on, and didn't have the time to deal with a failure like this.
Might need to start by getting another trans built! I need a spare anyway. And wait til Janet finds out how much a built trans with Peloquin and torque converter is going to cost. In fact, I don't like thinking about it!

I always play this for students when the think they don't have time for things. Take it easy on the Bombay Gin and it's the sure ticket to success with big projects. Are you currently getting over 4hrs. per night?
ETA: Building the spare trans and throwing it in there seems like the better, though more costly alternative. Frankly, I'll expect you at SDAC regardless of whether or not there's a Mean Mini there.

Lol! Thanks.
It's not as easy as it used to be when i could pull all nighters and bounce bad with a few hours. And working shiftwork has made it worse. I think it has aged me beyond my nearly 46 years.
And I'll take SDAC under advisement. I would like to go, but I want to race as that is a big part of it for me along with the fellowship.

i think you are right. after the break it most likely bent..
Time to toss in a used trans to make 2-3 runs on?
crank the line pressure and pray.
Slugmobile can still come to SDAC>? and you dont HAVE to race..

I could always send you one of my Transmissions to use until you get yours ready and done.

I really wish it could. It has been waiting around to get gone through again. And i believe the flexplate is cracked. So it has basically sat for the last few years while I've been concentrating on the van. I have only driven it to get the annual inspection, maybe 50 miles in 3 years!

Stefan, that might be one of the most generous things anyone has offered to me.
We'll talk soon.

Dang Wayne, if only you were within driving distance!
I'm pretty sure the Bro's Snap=on air hammer with long push extension would slide right through that diff and work it out like butta!

I need to check to see if i could find the same attachment.
I've got a cheaper air tool kit with air hammer, but only have shorter chisel bits.
This community is great that so many people actually are ready and willing to help folks. Unfortunately it just isn't practical most times!
I really do appreciate the sentiment! I can tell I've got a bunch of good friends here.

I would have to measure, but that def looks like one of them. His kit has about 4-5 long extensions, some tipped, some with flat pads on ends. I'm guessing that one is about 7" long?

I couldn't find any more info. Need to try and cross check Snap-on for better description.
Just no time with work right now.

Or either of these?

Not sure if those hammer tips would be too big, or if they would fit down through the diff. The 12mm punch one certainly should.

Why don't you just drain it and pull the rear cover off? Might help see what's going on...

How much diam do you think you have to work with? 1"? Or less?

Not sure exactly. I would say 1" or less. The limiting dimension being the very center of the diff.

Re: Test & Tune 1/8th mile, Thurs 3/22/18 Galot Motorsports Park, Benson NC
Perhaps this comment will come off as rather obtuse, but why not stick a 3/8" or 1/2" extension through there and hit it with a big hammer?

Because it's basically been done already. What it needs is something like the air hammer action, if that will even help.

Re: Test & Tune 1/8th mile, Thurs 3/22/18 Galot Motorsports Park, Benson NC
So smack the extension with the Rivet Gun then. I don't see any problem with not playing nice. Could also get a large sharpened punch to sit in the center of the axle stub, then Rivet gun.
Takes some practice to hold everything right, probably have to hold punch and die loosely in your hand for alignment, keeping pressure on the gun so you don't get your hand caught inbetween cause you are letting the die bounce. Rivet guns work better with weight behind it, otherwise they bounce.
I hit drill bits, clecos, etc if needed. The extension might need some filing to be useful again...
Also, removing 4 PS rack bolts then dropping K frame to get more access to trans....Pull that cover. I have pulled quite a few diffs IN van at the JY. If you have not beat on it hard, I don't see a point opening it up yet, cause its probably stuck in the Diff and will need coaxing no matter where you have the diff.
Bearing looks fine. 5 speeds don't even have one...just rides and chews on the extension housing. I did go through replacing diff bearings and I was quite annoyed by it all so I put OBX in my Daily at same time. Like you, its hard to find time around work schedule to sit long enough to get anything done. 30 min or even 2 hrs doesn't seem like enough time to get my brain invested in a proper fix.
