Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
:confused2: Okay, I replaced my water pump less than two years ago and here I am again needing to replace it again in my '89 Chrysler Lebaron. I purchased a rebuilt OEM pump part # R479847 and it is making a lot of noise and leaking a little. Has anybody had any luck with the parts stores new water pumps, which all appear to be made in China. You got Airtex, GMB, Gates, Cardo, AC Delco, and who knows what else. Oh, yeah I can get another remanufactured water pump from the dealer for $75. I paid $32 two years ago for a Mopar OEM reman. pump from Ebay.
Thoughts ??
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I use GMB, Gates, Cardone etc and no failures. What coolant are you using? Belt too tight?
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I have had good luck with Pep Boys Procool, which are made by U.S. Motorworks.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I would avoid Cardone, but thats just my opinion.
Airtex, GMB, even Master Pro (O'Reilly) have served me well.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
MasterPro is reman, Murray is the line for new pumps at Oreilly's. They do pretty well.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I put a Murray on my Daytona about 100,000 miles ago that lasted six weeks before it failed. I replaced it under warranty, and the replacement has been fine ever since. So basically it can be a crap shoot.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
The shadow goes 18-24 months between pump changes, I keep a fresh pump and housing all built up ready to swap when the installed one goes out. The failed pump goes back to autozone since that is where the whole process started about 10 years ago now. Last pump I got from them was still 'assembled in USA with US and foreign components'. The cardone and airtex units were straight up 'made in china' on the box. The belt tension and coolant quality are not factors here, the quality of the water pumps available for our engines has taken a steady decline in the past decade or more.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
Hmm, interesting, the pump on the Lebaron's 8v engine has been on there 4 years or better and has yet to give issue. In fact I've yet to actually have any of mine leak...
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I am using the original WP on my DD, I don't plan to change it until it starts to howl or leak.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
If it makes you guys feel any better a Porsche 944's timing, balance shaft belt's, rollers, and idler pulleys need to be replaced every 3 years. Those parts run around $250. The water pump which runs off of the timing belt should be replaced every 2nd timing belt replacement. A decent aftermarket pump is about $260. Kind of a lot for a 143 HP 4 cylinder.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
:mad:Well, I installed a O'Reilly's water pump. It lasted a whole two days before it started squealing. I guess I'll try Autozone.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
the only issues I've ever had with waterpumps is the reman ones having an interfearance between the impeller and the other half of the housing when you try to bolt it together
it's happenend with most or all of them I've used and I always check it now before starting to bolt things up
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I've had good luck with the NOS Mopar units I found a few years back. AC Delco pumps have been reliable for years too. (On more than my 4 bangers)

Don't buy the MasterPro, always get the new units...

Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I use whatever is cheapest from rockauto. My cars typically dont run enough for them to leak lol.
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
My turbo van leaks a little. I changed it for a pump that the fan blade was backwards and the car would overheat. I ordered a different one, same issue. I put the old one back in and just deal with the stupid drip....
Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
I usually get the *new* unit from NAPA when it comes to water pumps for the 2.2/2.5. It's looking like I gotta put a new one in the SL though. Even though it's a common block it uses that GLHS style water pump. Those can be a pita compared to the fool proof normal common block water pump with the big formed O-ring. I had hoped it would stop weeping out the hole after running a while but it just won't stop.

The newer style water pumps use a different pulley so it contacts on the outside of the drive belt
For example

Re: Water Pumps - lets have a dscussion !
The '89 common block water pump is unique. It is the normal common block water pump with the smooth pulley driven off the back side of the belt but it has the smaller hub bolt pattern like the early non-CB pumps. It is '89 only, pump and pulley...
You could change to a '90-'93 water pump (probably more common and cheaper), but you'd also need the '90+ pulley to go with it.
