Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
I have never made a true log of my mini, only posts here and there and Facebook stuff. Goal is to have at least the fastest 5 speed minivan but being in the 11's is also the goal. It's hard to format this so it's easy to read but I will try to organize it a little bit.
Here are the specs so far:
2.5 engine rebuilt using stock 2.5 rods with ARP rod bolts and used Weisco pistons.
Cylinder head is an older Forward motion IMSA valve swirl head.
BMF intake
Log exhaust manifold
T3/T4 hybrid 50 trim (0.63 stage 2)
1200CC RC injectors (They are rated at 58psi, I am running an FFV fuel regulator at 43.5 so they drop to around 1000cc)
E85
Boost button flashable SMEC
Intercooler is a 6.7 cummins one I got from work. Measures 12x30 and is 4.5in thick.
Transmission that is in it right now is a junkyard 3.77 523 that is trash. Second gear pops out, 3 out of 5 gears grind, and 5th gear whines.
I am building a 523/568 3.77 hybrid with an OBX right now for it
Clutch is a Spec stage 5+ which is an unsprung sintered Iron disc with a dual diaphragm pressure plate
The van itself is gutted behind the front seats
Power steering removed (welded spool valve in rack)
Lowered the front on car struts and Eibach springs
Rear is untouched right now but planning on removing leaf springs to drop it then I have some QA1 coilovers to hold it up.
The build is all round sloppy and almost ratty but It always draws a crowd. It's fun to drive around just to see people's reactions.
And here is a badly organized mass of pictures that I have so far.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
As far as future goals I need/want to make a header that brings the turbo around front where the A/c compressor was before (like Joe's van) and need to upgrade the turbo. Ive been looking into both commercial new options and possible "junkyard" options to keep the sloppyness. Right now with the hybrid turbo I seem to be at the max flow for the internal wastegate. I bored the wastegate hole out but I can't control boost below 22 psi. The gate is fully open by 15 psi but boost still climbs. Also peak power is made between 3500 and 6000 rpm but I make full boost by 2200 rpm so it seems I am losing some energy spooling the turbo that early. I am thinking of trying an HX35 turbo.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
I have not yet been able to run this combo at the track. I had it to the track last week for a test and tune but it resulted in a broken axle.
With the way the current transmission is, the only way I can get it into 2nd gear is to use the 2 step rev limiter to drop the RPM quickly and stay in the throttle. Somehow it drops right in when I do this, it grinds otherwise. On the strip I did this and as soon as I let the clutch out the right axle sheared right off. I was running snow tires at the time instead of slicks because I was afraid of breaking an axle. It seems I will have to definitely find a way to shift without putting all that load on the axle. I am thinking of trying a screen door closer on the clutch pedal to create some slip.

So as long as you are tryig to set your boost at 22 or higher, you get no boost creep? But anything below that it just creeps to 22psi?
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Check your FFV regulator. Mine has a sticker on it that says 55 psi.

Yes no creep if set above 22psi. Im also wanting to increase turbine flow so boost comes in at the same time as peak power for a smoother transition.

Mine has no sticker and stamped right into the metal it says 43.5 psi. I haven't checked it to be sure but when I was running on 93 the scaling worked out and AFR's were normal.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Full boost by 2200rpm? How are you verifying this? 4th gear starting @ 1500rpm and by 2200 your 22psi? Something not right about that IF everything else you are stating is correct.
What are you running for exhaust After the turbine housing? (ie 2 1/2" S/V or something bigger) and through what size exhaust if any?
What cam?
Sounds like the BMF is interfering with the W/G opening and causing you boost creep issues ;)
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Here is the exhaust that I am running.

Cam is a stock 2.5 cam and I was able to fully actuate the wastegate on the engine with air pressure before I dropped the engine down in. I will have to get a video of how quick boost builds.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Are you logging with MPScan or MPScanDroid?
The 2200rpm, seems low to me too but maybe it is bad instrument or something set wonky in mpscan. My in-dash tach was off so i added an aftermarket one.
In your situation, wouldn't a turbine clip give you what you want? I know it seems no one recommends that anymore. It would help your exhaust flow and may increase your spool time a bit?
And as far as the boost control, you can control for 25 just fine? I was wondering if your wastegate is getting pushed open at 22psi. But if you control for 25 or 27, then i guess that isn't likely.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
What is the 5spd record anyway?
For those axles maybe retard cam/ignition timing to get the torque to come in at a higher rpm?
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
According to the turbo-mopar times page:

Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Cliff Sebring ran a 13.0 in Mini Me (his first GRM project)with a 5 speed back in '99 or '00. This was the one done up as a Shelby Voyager.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
I might have missed it on the list, or its not there.
Didn't Cliff run 12's with his? Or he had another with an auto?
I remember he out ran Gus, using nitrous.

I'm sure it's not on the list. I don't think he ever ran a 12 with it...as a matter of fact, I think the joke became Cliff had the fastest Voyager but Gus had the fastest Caravan. :-). The 13.0 was definitely spray.

Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Is it just me, or still a little black box with a white X in it?

Not just you :)

Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
I never could figure out how to launch mine. I know that was costing me time, best I ever did was a high 15 at almost 100.
Re: Trying for fastest 5 speed minivan.
Well the 5spds are always going to be hard on the axles, with those shock loads of launch & shifting. Particularly so in something heavy like the vans.
100mph should have been good enough for 13's. If you want to get quick, get an auto... ;)
