Broken rear sway bar

I found that the rear sway bar on my 1986 LeBaron konvertible was broken. I figured it wouldn't be an issue as I was planning on replacing the suspension with parts from a 1989 J body coupe. That one is also broken, and one end is completely missing, Anyone have any idea what they were made of and can they be replaced? I think I am running into diminishing returns here due to the age of the cars. I know as far as track width and mounting up through 1989 will work and any of the K based chassis will provide a donor, after 89, I am not sure whether the whole thing is different or just the pivot brackets. Any ideas would be great! As far as where, I am on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Are you referring to the hollow tube inside the U-channel axle? Is the tube itself broken or is it just loose on the end where it's welded to the spindle mounting plate?

That's my guess too. They get mighty clanky in the rear when that happens.

I would have it welded, and look into buying a real rear sway bar from polybushings.com since they are on closeout right now.

I've welded them on both of Ray's Spirits, and I think his Acclaim too.

Adam, have you ever had to weld one with a solid bar? So far all the ones that I've seen snap a weld are the hollow tube rear axles. Seems like they twist more, snapping the factory welds.

I had the rear axle U-channel semi-boxed with flat plate steel on both ends on my SL in addition to the solid bar it came with and a polybushings.com rear sway bar. I haven't driven the car in quite a while, but it's on rails now compared to my CSRT.

Yes, Ray's Spirit R/T has a solid bar. For that one, I used a grinder to somewhat taper the bar, and cut a bit of a groove in the plate around it in order to make sure I got sufficient penetration and then laid a second heavy bead over that one. The hollow tube bars are too thin to make that possible or necessary.
