L-body Manual Steering Rack Help
Hi all.
I have an issue with the manual steering rack in my Horizon. From memory, it is from an 88. It was making this clunk that I could hear and feel in the wheel, and when I pulled the passenger side boot to inspect, I found this plastic piece on the rack hanging outside the tube.

It appears that there should be something that retains this piece inside the tube, but there isn't anything. Is there a clip or something I am missing?
Thanks,
Mike
Re: L-body Manual Steering Rack Help
Those three tabs are suppose to clip into the three oval slots in the rack housing. The tabs on mine broke off and the bushing came out like your. I ended up making a bronze bushing that bolts in so it can't come out. Actually I just got a reman rack from rock auto last month and the tabs were broke on that bushing right out of the box.😞

Thanks, Adam. I did see that. A few posts down I mentioned I would be in for one if you made more. Any chance of that happening? :)
Re: L-body Manual Steering Rack Help
I'm on vacation now. Let me check Monday if I have a peace of bronze at work. If I do ill make one for you. If not we may have to get a group buy together due to the high material cost $90 per foot😞

Thanks, Adam! Enjoy your vacation.
Re: L-body Manual Steering Rack Help
Uh, how much bronze are you likely to find at work Adam? I'm a buyer if another set beyond Mike's gets made:nod:
Re: L-body Manual Steering Rack Help
Certainly not Lengel quality but this is how a guy on the other site repaired his.
Thanks

Did anyone ever make replacements for these bushings? Mine exploded.

Re: L-body Manual Steering Rack Help
FYI: An Oilite bushing 25mm ID 35mm OD and 25mm L seems to be the correct replacement. I pinned it in with some M3 button heads. Readily available from the McMaster Carr Speed Shop.

Since forums are good at housing historical information, here's a note to future me when I need to do this again:
McMaster Carr 25mmx35mmx25mm Oilite bushing:

Brass button head M3 x 6.0mm screws:

M3 tap if you need one:

2.5mm drill for tap:

Notes:
Why brass screws? Seemed like the least galvanic reaction when placing the order. There shouldn't be much load on them, bushing is a pressfit.
Press the bushing in with a 32mm socket, unless you have more tools at your disposal.
Having this bushing took my rack from floaty to firm performance. A bit more effort to turn, but better feel. No issues so far.
