Hi, guys,
I need a crossover shaft oil seal, part no. 4446285. Dimensions 7/8" OD, 1/2" ID, and 1/4" thick.
My 5-speed manual transmission is leaking BADLY, oil pooling into the cavity on top, and the leak seems to be from that seal. It's the only seal I didn't replace in the transmission. It didn't come with the kit.
The Mopar part is discontinued, but it's a common size. Surely by now someone has found a source for a seal that will work. I need to know that source. ANYBODY?

I would clean it up well and make sure that's the case. I've never had a problem with that area of the trans. Are you sure the case isn't cracked, or the selector cover piece isn't missing some sealant somewhere where it bolts to the case?

Mine had a tear in the seal and I wanted a new seal since the rest of the trans was already refreshed. I would make sure the vent is clear and open. The crossover shaft is hollow and that black cap on the end is supposed to be the cover to keep water splash out.

[PART 1 of 4] To verify the leak is coming from the crossover shaft I cleaned the trans, wrapped the shaft of the crossover where it enters the top of the transmission with a piece of paper towel, and drove the car at high speed and high rpm for about 1-1/2 miles. Got new seal on crossover shaft. Still a bit of seepage under top cap. Off it comes. Fun in the cold.

The crossover shaft is hollow. Oil works its way up the shaft, around the black cap, and onto the top of the trans. There is a fix from Chrysler which installs into the hollow shaft, effectively making it longer, to fix the problem. Sorry I don't have a part number. I just threaded mine and installed a brass fitting with a foot or so of vacuum line. Hope this helps!

Dugzshelby, do you have any pics etc. by chance? I've never heard of that.
Correction of a possible misunderstanding. By "top cap" I meant the plate affixed with six bolts, not the vent. Oil is seeping out of the interface there, not the vent cap, and I'll have to remove the top today and reseal it. About the vent, I cannot blow air through the vent on either of two transmissions. There's a supposedly air-permeable piece of spongy metal in the hole on both gearboxes. Can't imagine oil getting through that. Eh?

Here's a trick to help you replace the top plate, to make sure the three lugs stay lined up when you have no room to easily maneuver, i.e., when the transmission is still in the car. Wipe the necessary surfaces clean & dry, and put a drop of superglue, set instantly with baking soda, between the rotating and locked shafts within the top plate. This locks the three lugs in line while you fumble the top plate back into place. The glue-drop pops loose as soon as you move anything, after the plate is locked down in place by the six bolts. .........Ray
