Michigan TD troubleshooter?
Is there anybody in the area that can help me troubleshoot my car? The list of problems is long, I need somebody to help me check cam and ign timing, and whatever else may be wrong such as bad sensors or something else that I don't know to check. I have an 88 Shelby Z with a 2.5 cb T2 turbo and wire harness. T1 auto smec. I feel stupid asking for help with this but I don't know it all and I don't wanna mess crap up by doing something without knowing what I'm doing. If you are in the area and have any questions feel free to text me 586-563-7485.

I may be able to give you a hand next week sometime. Does the car run right now?

Re: Michigan TD troubleshooter?
yea it runs just has a lot of popping on decel and at idle. At the sdac meet I heard the guys 2.5 t2 shadow. I was sooo quiet. Thats what I'm aiming for
Re: Michigan TD troubleshooter?
Ok so I attempted to set the timing. The timing mark was bouncing 2-3 degrees in either direction of where it was supposed to be. I assume the timing belt is stretched causing the issue. Any thoughts?
Re: Michigan TD troubleshooter?
that was with the coolant temp unplugged right?

It can also be play in the distributor or gears to it on the intermediate shaft. Generally, not a huge concern. If it was a fresh rebuild and everything new you could say something was screwed up. But on a well used engine, a couple degrees is almost normal.
If you want to check cam timing (and it looks like you have a timing light), set the distributor so you are at 0 degrees advance (with coolant sensor unplugged) and point the timing light into the hole in the side / top of the cam timing belt cover. The small hole in the cam gear should be centered in the cover hole.

The engine is pretty fresh. Its a 2.5 out of a high school training aid that had something like 100 miles on it. I am wondering if it was the Timing belt practice engine though.

Re: Michigan TD troubleshooter?
The only code I got was tps sensor and coolant sensor. Tested TPS and it was fine. Code eventually went away. As did the coolant temp sensor. Its been a little over 1.5 years since I had the timing done. If the dizzy was stationary. What would cause it to be 12-14 degrees off?
Re: Michigan TD troubleshooter?
Ok heres all the troubleshooting I did so far. I took off the top timing belt cover and checked tension and alignment. All is well as far as I know. Ignition timing is still somewhere between 10-14 degrees. Plugs wires cap and rotor are all good. What else could make my timing be somewhat erratic?
Re: Michigan TD troubleshooter?
Have you tried another timing light?
