Higher MPH digits.. A friend of mine and I are designing some white face overlays for l-body's. None have been printed as of yet, I just wanted to get some feedback on what you guys think. All we have worked on so far is the speedometer this is the higher mph overlay. You could get them in just about any color combo you wanted. Looking for around 50 bucks shipped.

keep in mind, it's still a work in progress, the final product will be a very nice set of gauge overlays.:thumb:

There used to be files with white faced gauges you could print out yourself. Don't know if they went above the factory speed, though.

I thought I had them files somewhere....... boy, that was a LONG time ago.... Gotta start diggin.

Do you have some pics of the gauges? What were they made out of?

He just scanned them and edited them with photoshop. You could just edit these as a base.

I have a 125 MPH speedo in my charger and it ends right at the stock 85MPH mark? Anyone know anything about these?

Well, do you want to part with it? :)

Sure. It will be missing the trip reset knob assembly, as mine was broken in my black car, so i robbed it. If you have a spare, it swaps easily.

And Mario, PICS!!!

Do you know what he used for material? I know you can't just print them out of paper.. it wouldnt work because of the bevel on the gauge itself

Not too sure, maybe he can chime in.

I did this years ago ('96-'97). I had the best results with matt finish white styrene sheet, printed with an inkjet printer. I bought mine at a hobby shop. Then applied a light coat of Testers clear flat. It lasted and looked good for years. The styrene also lets some light pass through at night.

Keep in mind that the stock instruments are concaved quit a bit.

Later, I went to a mechaical P-body speedo. I had to rearrange the angle on the odo reset knob, and used RTV to hold the speedo in place. I also had to relocate the high-beam indicator to where the shift light goes, so a little rearranging on the PC board was in order. It was 120mph and looked completely stock. It still works fine to this day.

Ok, we test fitted some of the gauges in my spare cluster.

Now keep in mind that these gauges are thermal printed on outdoor grade vinyl, these will last a long time.

Here's one with light,

Here's another in the dark with the STOCK lighting.

I think they look pretty sweet, can't wait to get some installed in my cluster in the omni.

We need to make an overlay for the kph speedo but with the mph scale as the primary....

Perhaps some of the canadian members could raid the junkyards and provide the speedos for us. I would imagine that they are pretty common (if the cars haven't all rusted away by now)

Could an overlay be made for the '90 speedo such that it matched?

Wouldn't the white needles be hard to see? I have to look for the needles in that picture.

Nice response. I wasnt expecting this much.

I am the guy that is making them. It started off as just a one off project for Corby's Omni, then he thought maybe I should try to sell them.

There basically will be 2 options available. Black, and white. The black set, will just be the speedometer overlay with white lettering. No red at all, the extended will be white as well. Pricing on just the speedometer overlay will be $20. THIS IS ONLY FOR THE SPEEDOMETER, not the tach or the 3 small ones on the right. This is great for someone who doesnt really care about appearances, but would like to have the extended overlay. The material is a satin black (similar to stock) and has the letters and numbers thermal printed on it. Free shipping to US buyers, $3.00 additional for our northern neighbors.

The white set will be as pictured. I have decided to do them for $40 for the set. That will include 2 Speedometers ( 1 normal, 1 extended), tach/fuel, and the 3 on the right. Shipping is included in the $40 for US buyers, our friends up north will be $45 shipped.

Right now, I ONLY have what is pictured. No Canadian friendly versions yet. That is something I would look into doing, but I would need to get ahold of a cluster or at least a very high quality scan of one.

The install is fairly straight forward. It is a vinyl plastic with adhesive on the back. IT IS VERY FLEXIBLE. What you will need to install them is a heat gun (hair dryer works too), a small spray bottle, and a small squeege (discarded credit cards work GREAT). Since the gauges are concaved, a bit of heat is required to get the gauges to mold to it. It is really easy though, as vinyl is really forgiving. Just heat it up, push it down, and repeat. Took me MAYBE 10 minutes to do the test cluster. I will also email you instructions with pictures upon purchase.

As for the lighting, that was with the blue condoms. It really is that bright. You can replace them with LEDs or colored bulbs if you like, but I just wanted stock pictures. I think the needles would be easier to see if they were not all busted up. Their is no tach needle, the fuel one is broke, and the speedometer is short. I think I will paint Corby's orange on the final product though. A paint pen works great to do that.

So what I need at this point is some confirmed buyers.

Before I start making them, I need to get at least 8 confirmed buyers!

Thanks!

Once you get the vendor thing figured out, I'd be interested as well. I like the idea of covering over the trip meter too. Just to continue the #'s in the same size. It's not really that important is it? haha

I also have a couple Canadian SC clusters in KPH if you decided to do some...

smdandb2
12-26-2006, 01:06 PM
Well, covering up the trip meter with this material won't work out so well. Its rather thin, so you would easily be able to tell something was not right around the tripmeter area.

With the holidays, I havent had any time to figure this stuff out. I promise, sometime this week I will have details!

I talked to Frank, and it looks like these will start out as a group buy for now. So for NOW, the vendor status is temporarily taken care of!

What I would preferably need to do them in KMH is JUST the metal gauge assembles only... and I would like to be able to keep them. I hate shipping anything other than letter size packages across the border.

If you can get me the gauge panels from a junk cluster, I will send you a set for free!
