I wanted to start this up for other people with the cavys and sunbirds with the 5 speed and the ECO Tec just to see how many others have had problems with the transmissions in there cars and GM giving them the runaround about geting it fixed.I got my car new in December of 04 and in january with 1000 miles on the car 3rd gear came out, folowed by 4th,It was fixed 4 times after that and the last repair it took 5 miles before it came out again and thats when the problems started.I ended up with a lawyer to get the car repaired of taken back by GM.after the car siting in my grandmas back yard for 4 months and ended up with 3 grand and no waranty on the transmission,I got a trans out of a junk yard in cannonsburg pa for 500 bucks and installed it myself.I started using Royal Purple sycromax in the transmission other than the called for ATF and have had no real problems with it sence that moment I also chance the oil about every 10k in the trans to be safe.I also needed some extra cash this summer and was cleaning out the garage so the trans was toredown for scrap.the sift fork for 3rd and 4th was broken and both teflon folowers were gone,I will post pictures of it in the near future.I just wanted to leave this info for any one else who has this problem.

Also for those who dont know me,im 6'2" 170 lbs so Im not that strong so there has to be something wrong with the design of the fork for it to break.

Very interesting! You had these issues while using the recommended oil with no problems since you went to Syncromesh (of course you have a GM). We have no problems when using the recommended, however your failure seems identical to the issue seen when a member used Syncromesh! Interesting!

It is interesting,it is also the sythetic oil but it does seem to help,I just want to make every one on this board that may have one for a daily driver to beware.Although GM did also pay to have the engine in the rampage rebuilt.

Wife has 63k on her 02 Eco with the getrag trans and no issues yet even after a few dragstrip floggings and the 6'2" 290 lb idiot trying to make it "fast"(still has factory fill too)...

The shifter itself however is a piece of crap....

If you put yours in reverse will it pop over to 4 gear position??

I think I'm gonna break down and pony up for the B&M shortie.

When they first started putting the ECOs in the cav/fire...The big selling point that they MADE us point out to potential suckers was that it had the GETRAG 5 speed.....:blah: :blah: :blah: :blah:

I had a LOT of go fast goodies for this car. then I came to the realization that...well...It's a Cavalier! And a heavy one heavy to top it off....

just wait for the timing chain to go and wipe out the head. then the fun really starts. those are pretty good motors though.
