Is a 2.4 SOHC Neon engine non-interference?

Acquaintance had engine replaced at a shop - they said since the timing belt broke, the engine was junk.

I don't know of any 2.4 sohc.... only 2.4 DOHC. Either was they are interference. Timing belt breaks, and BANG go the valves.

Srt-4's are not interference engines though, i dontknow about the rest but it seems like they would be the same???

DESCRIPTION
The 2.4 Liter (148 cu. in.) in-line four cylinder engine is a double over head camshaft with hydraulic lash adjusters and four valve per cylinder design. The engine is free-wheeling; meaning it has provisions for piston-to-valve clearance. However valve-to-valve interference can occur, if camshafts are rotated independently.

The cylinders are numbered from front of the engine to the rear. The firing order is 1–3–4–2.

The engine identification number is located on the rear of the cylinder block

edit- thats for a srt4

Really,

Is that because of the lower compression?

I got that from tech connect, dont know what makes them not interferance, but if the belt breaks and one cam spind like a second more the valves will hit each other

Well, good to know that if the belt breaks, valve smashing will commence.

That could be, in his first statement he said sohc neon. Neons never had a 2.4, only a srt4 had a 2.4. All the chrysler 2.4's are dohc.

Correct, there is more room so less chance of the valve fan dango, :eyebrows:

Not sure about that. SRT-4 pistons are not dished.

No, but they have valve reliefs and whats the compression, low 8's. NA DOHC's are around mid 9's-10:1.

OK, I went by what the owner told me. Didn't know they didn't exist. It was definitely a SOHC so it must have been the 2.0.

2.0's are interference (SOHC + DOHC) all 2.4 DOHC's are non interference(NA+Turbo)

OH yeah? What about the 16's?, I asked Darrell about my setup and he said 16's will be good to also give torque for the convertor

Im not sure about the 16's but I imagine it would be close.
