View Full Version : Pondering a New Project: RWD + 2.4 turbo

As much as I love the old 2.2, I'm becoming more intriged by the 2.4 turbo setups that I'm seeing. I've also kicked around the idea of a rear wheel drive 2.4 turbo car. The availability of a certain item may stop this project from ever beginning. That is an adapter plate to mate the 2.4 block to a 727 Torqueflite transmission. I don't know anybody that could make this item. I've seen one or two cars that have been built, but the owners always say "some guy somewhere" built the adapter plate for them. Does anybody know of a source for the adapter plate? I'd also like to know if you will need some special torque converter for a setup like this. Any help or tips would be appreciated.

I pretty sure Pat's convertors could get you a convertor for a good price. As far as the adapter, I think they will be more coming out in the future as more people go this route.

Here's a car. You supply engine, tranny, rear wheels.

And if you $55,000 to spare, nice IMSA Daytona.

I'm more interested in building a Mopar A-body or something like that.

sweet :thumb: there is a company that can adapt any engine to any trans. you have to cut the bellhousing off and it bolts to the front pump. I'm going with the GM 350 trans. cheapest to make strong. I'll find out more about this company and post it.

So, it will have a separate bellhousing just like a manual transmission? I am definitely interested in any information you can provide.

I'm going with the GM 350 trans.

You gonna convert your car to RWD or go with something totally different? I'm looking for a late 60's Plymouth Valiant or an early 60's Dart.

I'd think going with a 904 or a 999 or maybe even a 518(o/d) would keep fab work down. I'd think it'd be a better idea to reuse a mopar trans, shift linkage, etc than to have to fab from scratch, plus the older mopar trans aren't so weak right out of the box like the chevy transmissions. No real advantage to going with a 727. I know other muscle mopar guys are putting 999 internals into a 904 case and then you got a real strong package, plus a 727 costs you .2 in the 1/4 over the 904. Trouble is a stock 904 can at best hold up behind a mild 360, if you want to be making more power than that, that's what the 999 internals are for.:thumb:

Thats why I'm going for a Ford C4, and the bellhousing is removeable.

I got a 78 dodge colt. it will be next winter project. I seen some very cool early darts at the Chrysler classics

I wanna do a RWD neon. neons are amazing handling cars to begin with and a 2.4L or even a 2.0L DOHC with a reasonable turbo hooked to the dakota bellhousing/supra trans (easiest to implement IMHO) with a ford T-bird irs in the rear would be sick. :)

I say easiest way of doing a rwd drive 4 banger would be the 70s dodge colts and plymouth arrows. The cars are rwd and wiegh less then a omni. I got an 77 plymouth arrow that I'm shoe horning in a 360 into. I went with the arrow since I friend got for cheap. It turn over but wouldn't run so he didn't want it. I drag it home and rip out the old and start planing for the new.

they are easy but finding a rust free one could be tough depending on where you live. :)
