I have a 2008 PT limited turbo. When I put it in either forward or reverse and step on the gas it goes but if I let off the gas it feels like the brakes are on. All four wheels turn freely when I have it on the lift and spin the wheels. The only codes I get are U1417 and U1418. This car does have traction control and anti-lock brakes. Another important thing I noticed is that when the car is running and in neutral it will not roll, if you turn the car off then it rolls freely. This has me truly stumped, so any help will be much appreciated.

Although I have not had the problem you described with my 05 PT GT autostick, I wonder if it may be a symptom of a bad solenoid pack on the trans.
The trans is all electronic shifting, and if something isn't quite right I'm thinking it may be possible to have something like you are describing.
So, if someone with more 41TE doesn't chime in, you might want to search for descriptions of bad solenoid packs, and see how they have presented themselves.
Sorry I am not more help.
But, if you need a trans, my PT GT was totaled recently, and my trans was working perfectly. And had synthetic trans fluid changes every 30k miles. (107k now).

Sorry, maybe should have read better. Thought you said "does not have traction control and ABS".

There is some info here, but will need further diagnosis.

Thanks for the info. I put it on the lift today and it ran up through all gears just as it should. I did have to turn on traction control to do it. With the car in neutral and running i could rotate the wheels, but not as easily as when i turned it off. The codes i had went away after doing this. The ABS light came on, but I expected it to since the back wheels were not rotating. I pulled the tranny pan and everything went down hill from there. The link below shows what I found. That piece of metal that was in the pan is definitely a concern. Don't have a clue where it came from. The fluid was definitely contaminated. The pan had a cork gasket so it was off before, the factory doesn't use a gasket. Check out the pics in the link and let me know what you think.

Was that chunk a piece of a gear?

Not sure, but I don't think so. The long sides are strait and square. The short sides are rough and where it would have broken. It is big enough that I am surprised it made it back to the pan. I am not really seeing any other metal fillings in the pan. I have decided to put a new filter in it and fill it up and see what happens. I am going to change the shift valve pack also. Before i put the filter in I am going to drop the valve body and look for anything there. I may have a bunch of metal in or on top of that. I'm only going to try the new fluid and and what not because of am curious. I am just so surprised that I don't have a filter that is full of metal. $72.00 for 2 gallons of ATF+4 and a filter, it's only money so why not try it. I'll let everyone know what happens.

looks like it might be a tooth from a planetary gear or a piece of a snap ring, the ealry 604=s were good for breaking the underdrive snap ring years ago, only way to fix it was tear down and rebuild
