Are there any horsepower to gain from switching to a manual steering rack?

I seem to remember around 5-10 hp.

That's not bad at all !!!

Not bad but turn the boost up 1-2 psi and bingo, that loss is regained. I hate manual steering, especially if your a city driver.

So a power steering pump kills as much horsepower as the AC system? Also is it true that for every 100lbs you loose, you gain 10 hp's.

Not sure about A/C but if its not turned it, its sucking No HP.

Not true at all.

Too mny variable based on et nd mph...along with weight of the car and HP.

But for a stockish car around 15 seconds in the 1/4 or slightly better, somewhere in the ballpark.

Listen I'm sorry, but I did not want it to start a real world circumstances scenarios.

haha. Then it is true if you want a broad ballpark figure.

I know that it is probably impossible to calculate, but I know that the lighter you are, the faster you will travel in space. Why would the lotus Elise be such a fast car with such a gutless motor? I don't want a ball park figure, all I want is to make my charger blitzkrieging fast!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats the problem, to many variables. Impossible to get it 100%. To make it fast, lighten it and make more power. Simple, :p

Hey, simon thanks for always answering, you're allright in my book. How are you doing since the accident, I hope you don't let go the bike thing!

Healing fine I guess, just not fast enough in my books. The bones are together but not very strong. I was going to race this weekend but changed my mind. So yeah, not giving up the bike thing. Thanks for asking.

So... you want answers, but not ballpark and also not critical, either.

K. Now we are on the same field.;)

I witnessed an ACR Neon on the dyno a few years back and when the took off the power steering belt, the gain was around 4hp to the wheels. Memory not so good, so I will say it was no more than 7.

So, a safe guess on the manual conversion would be about 5 hp to the wheels even though the car was stationary. You'd think it would be 0 or maybe 1 hp since the pump isn't working... but then again, I guess it's always working, just not performing on the pumps end.

I have a manual rack in my Omni and it's just as hard to drive as a power steering car with no belt.....Unless you induce a little wheelspin low speed turns are a BI!ch....
