I have a chance to get a 1G OR a 2G talon intercooler cheap. Would this work ok on my 2.5L, T2 mini up to ..say..14psi? Could I put out ..say.. 250HP at the crank with this?

I am currently NOT intercooled.

Check out my old 'upgrading the TC intercooler' thread in the turbo section. I used a 1G Talon intercooler (or three) for that project...

yes, i know plenty of people that run 18-20psi through that intercooler (i'm a DSM guy too) and i have run 17psi through mine for 2years before upgrading. a friend of mine ran low 12's on the stock SMIC. it's capable. i also have my old stock one if needed

and as 2.216V said, sometimes a few is better than one! my friend just THREW OUT his 2welded together IC's! it would be been great for you, but he needed to make room, and i have no room to sift through his trash! :-) owell.

The first gen DSM intercoolers work pretty good but from what i hear they get heat soaked pretty easily. Then again I think anything that size probably would anyway. If you can get it for a good price then go for it man.

The only plus is that they are a thick core. They suck other wise. That is usually the first upgrade a DSMer would do. Ive got one sitting around if you want it.

don't know that they "suck" as you say, they aren't the best, but they don't suck, that's for sure! they will hold just fine without any issues for 12-16psi on these TDs.

I have seen a stock DSM I/C take one to 140mph..thats a DOHC 16V 2.2 ... not an 8V sohc unit!

I suppose the DSMers that Im around dont run that low of boost... 16psi is pushing the heat soak issue with these.. Most of the guys I know run 20psi+
They also do not flow very well. but that is just MHO...

stock DSM turbos are bigger than most stock TD turbos too. so 15psi is flowing more air volume too, not just pressure.

Actually they really aren't. The 14B from the 1G's I would say would be like a Garrett T3 that we have. The T25 from the 2G's are tiny though, I would say they would be pretty close to compareable to the stock Mitsu. turbo's that came on my minivan.

well, i can tell you this... i held my 14b up to my garret on my 85glh, and the 14b is bigger. now not getting technical, but the inlet/outlet & wheel looked bigger as well on my 14b.

however yes, the T25 (T-2small) is smaller, comparable to the later model turbos on the TDs. i should grab a t25 from the attic and check that one out too sometime huh?

If you are going through the trouble of putting on an FMIC, just get one a little better than the DSM Gen 1/2 IC. Get one a little bigger, so the is no need to wonder if is big enough and get one that would be easier to plumb the lines for! Keep your eyes open, and you can find some pretty good ones on ebay for a reasonable price.

i agree. the qaulity of the stock DSM would be fine i think... but the fitment would suck IMHO, and you can get some on ebay now for about $100shipped. for a decent 3x8x12 which would be enough for a small-decent application.
