View Full Version : Consulier and Ferrari vs roll back truck

Bad day. A totaled 328, smashed front of the blue car.
Roll back/tow truck blocking both lanes of a mountain pass on a blind corner.
I was heading north and the Ferrari was heading south.
I was going a decent speed , not too crazy. I came round the corner,s aw the truck, veered hard right dropped off road hit dirt spun, 360, hit the trucks driver side wheel. Bent it in half and destroyed his axle. I walked away fine.
Ferrari tried to swerve , spun first ,slid tail first into the truck bounced off and hit a tree.
Aaaaahhhh

Gotta give props to the Consulier's strength. I have a bruised pelvis , broken molar and sore shoulders and stomach area from belts.
Now to deal with the aftermath.

OUCH! Man that sucks! What was the truck doing in the middle of the road!?

I am glad to hear you weren't seriously injured.

As for the car, that looks like it can be fixed fairly easily....depending on how far the stresses made it through the chassis. The whole car needs to be NDI tested to make sure that the stresses didn't cause delamination or any other damage throughout the tub. More than likely the answer is that it didn't hurt the structure. I don't know how it's built, really, but the repair actually might not be all that bad.

Oh no!
Glad to hear you weren't hurt worse!
Maybe Jacob can chime in about repair procedure. The crash test car they used didn't look in too bad of shape post test, so it appears the structure can really take a beating.

The truck was attempting to back into a driveway which was on the left side of the road. He was trying to do a 3+ point turn on a mountain road with a 55mph speed limit.

Repair-wise most body gaps appear to be unchanged.
The windshield seems to have been loosened and the seal is not intact.

There is a carbon fiber race yacht builder/repair place in West Palm. Hoping to have him do repair after ensuring the alignment etc.

The area damaged seems to be primarily Kevlar , the inner fender area has a very small crack. Gaps around front wheels are the same.
Some weird stuff - A/C fan no longer comes on, lights under dash where knocked out of turn signals etc.
Wheel destroyed from going over the side.

Is that one of those shiny plastic covers over the truck wheel?

So your fender was able to taco a steel 22.5" wheel?

jacob mosler
09-22-2016, 03:54 PM
little bondo and some paint, youll be fine!

but seriously, the car should be fine structurally.

with enough front impact the nose will start to buckle straight across the tops of the front wheels. There doesnt appear to be any signs of that.

Be sure to drop the front sub-frame and check the mounting holes for elongation etc.

polopharm
09-22-2016, 03:57 PM
That's an Alcoa aluminum wheel.
And look at the front view of the truck.

I see some minor stress crack above it on the upper fender.
No appearance of buckling. The passenger side door MAY be a little more difficult to close , but I may be being neurotic.

Glad your ok. I can tell you these cars are hard as F. A normal car would have likely been totaled. I mean you crushed the truck axle and that's all the damage? I will post a pic of the crash test car at 55 mph, small damage only. Your avoidance skills and car setup saved your car. The Ferrari at likely stock setup lost control and is now
Gone. Time for a a full repaint ?

Crashing sucks, never a silver lining in a crash ever. Great news that you both walked away from it, story would be even worse if either of you hadn't. That 328 is going to make some resto shop a nice front clip.

I thought I read someplace or heard through the grapevine at some point that the Kevlar used in the car was in the rear bulkhead/firewall area and that most everything else was some form of fiberglass. Dunno if it's E-glass or S-glass. I also don't know if they used structural foam, honeycomb, metal sandwich. I'm fairly sure there's structural foam in it, but have never gotten a full answer.

Jacob, I'm very interested in this sort of thing. Are you at liberty to discuss the structural build of the car as far as the composite build-up is concerned? The other thing I don't know...were these autoclaved or just vacuum bagged?

Work started on blue car today. The formula car fabricator was very impressed with how the car did in the wreck. No damage to subframe mounting points. Suspension undamaged. No misalignment of body panels.
After driving it , he liked it even more!

Picking up a front clip from Rossion, may use it to graft on the outer skin or use it to make a mold. Will be making a mold for the front bumper as well if anyone needs a bumper.

Many different materials and methods found in the construction so far and we have only be dealing with one corner!

Front bumper repair almost done , then making a mold off of it.
Then 2 new bumpers.

Parts list was for items they bought from other places. (I think) They made these. So even if there was a parts list number, only place to get them is Rossian. You ask them if they have any? Or is it container diving time?

player1up
12-01-2016, 04:51 PM
For clarity:
Headlight Bracket: Thing that holds the bucket to the car.
Headlight Bucket: The actual bucket that the headlight sits into. ( Bolts to the bracket. Also used to aim the lights )
Trim ring: the ring that holds the bulb into the bucket.
Headlight surround: Fiberglass thing that covers the gap between the car and the headlights ( only the series one cars have these )
I'm guessing that the bracket is different between the series 1 and 2 cars...

Andy, Do you need the bracket or the bucket or both?

The aluminum brackets are custom but look pretty simple to recreate.
The parts list says something like st161,st162,st171,st172 for the assemblies, but I'd guess that was a part number from a supplier that includes the bucket and trim ring.
The actual buckets should be the same as any car that had the h4701 / h4703 sealed beams ( like the 89ish suburban ). I'll see if I can confirm that tomorrow.
There was a crate of headlights in one of the storage containers and the lights had the buckets/ trim rings with them. Not to be confused with the headlight surround.

Now we move onto
Install new bumper, replace headlights, and the small stuff-a/c stopped working as well as some other lights and gauges, but the end is in sight.
I drove it around the block today , first time in months!

Looks great! So glad to here and see the results are this good. This car deserved a perfect result.
Are you planning to upgrade those lights to the H4 ones? That might be a visual improvement too, or at least improve your vision at night.

Looks like it was high density foam and fiberglass construction from the cross section pictures. Am I right?

It's been a long strange trip! Thanks for the support.
On the brightside I think community will benefit from the knowledge on repairing them. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170117/9cd786910fc97e61d7e9f5c04c35e3ff.jpg

Soo got it all just about done when Presto....the old Dent in the front fender returned!! But wait , it's an entirely new fender. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170126/14bb6b694ca6c8cb91f5defb5f591b94.jpg

The ghost of dents past returned.
So it turns out the head light mounting frame is too narrow and when tightened pulled the fender down, and thus the dent!!

Headlight pulled out Dent goes away , thank God. New headlight mounting hardware being fabricated now.

Damn!
Glad it released when you removed the light.

For how strong that section of the fender is, it almost sounds like someone over torqued the mounting hardware to be able to distort the fender. Interesting either way!

You would think, but the car had that Dent from back when it was new.
The head light mounting bracket is different on this side compared to the other side. And different from the red race car.
