Shelby and "Bolster Gray" Fabric Group Buy

This is a group buy for the reproduction of the Shelby fabric and the matching gray fabric used on the bolsters/seat back and parts of the rears and door panels. The fabric will be produced through SMS Auto Fabrics in Portland OR and will have 60" of usable width. We need to get 60 yards total between both types committed with a 50% deposit to start the production which will take 6-12 months to complete.

This may be your only opportunity to get Shelby fabric and I can almost guarantee it will be your absolute only opportunity to get the matching bolster material as this is even more rare/non-existent. I will start a list of those interested and if we can meet the needed amount I will start a 25 day period to get deposits in. If we don't get enough deposits all money will be refunded after the 25 day period to avoid any PayPal fees.

Fabric will be sold by the yard with multiple yards of the same pattern being in a single continuous length with 60" of usable width.

Shelby Fabric - $100/yd (USD)

Please indicate how much you would want of each type (Shelby and/or Base) and only reply if you are serious about committing. Payment details will be posted if it looks like we are going to hit the target. It is up to you to make measurements of how much you need so make sure you add a bit extra for scrap.

Here are some estimations for an 89 CSX that are just for guidance. I claim no responsibility if they are wrong as it is up to you to determine how much you need.

Thanks Greg, and I agree on the time. He told me 6mo. should be good so I gave him a year but in reality if it is going to happen and get done I don't care too much how long it will take since there is no other choice or option.


I would like to add, and this is purely speculation, but he makes 100yds of fabric to make the setup worth while. My probably accurate guess is that he will make the remainder of what we don't purchase in the Shelby format as he can sell that to the Ford folk as well and that is where he saw the value. That means this will be your only chance to get your hands on the base fabric to do a complete recover. Just putting that out there too.

I've sent in a sample of the OEM Shelby fabric and will be getting back a sample weave of the fabric that will be produced. It won't be the same colors but it will show if the weaves match which is the best I can do as once production starts with the actual colors that is it. I figured I'd wait until I get that back before taking deposits. Until that time and up until the deposit deadline people are welcome to add to the group buy. Once I start taking the deposits I will post here and PM everyone on the list with details.

Not sure I understand why they wouldn't just send samples of the correct colors tho, is our order going to be a custom COLOR as well as the WEAVE?

This is my guess, and only a guess, but I'd imagine setting up a weaving machine takes some time and a decent amount of thread. The colors will be ordered to match those on the original fabric but with no money currently in hand he is probably not willing to put out that kind of investment. The weave pattern on the other hand is just a matter of programming so he could get me a weave sample using the colors he already has in his machine. I also asked if possible to have a sample with the shelby lettering though I don't know yet if he is willing to put the extra time in at this point. In his defense, and that is how I do business, nothing is final/started until money is exchanged so any time he puts in now is a risk he is taking hoping this random guy that came in to his shop will follow through with the orders he says he has.

As an update I have a sample in at SMS and am waiting for them to return a sample of the reproduced weave, though in a different color. If that looks good I will begin taking deposits and will PM everyone on the list. When that happens you will have 25 days to get your deposit in and then I will start the production process. During this time if anyone else wants in they are free to add to the order. After this time the order will be closed.

I've sent a sample in to SMS and he was going to get me back a sample of the weave for me to see before starting to take people's money. At this point he still hasn't got me the sample back. Before starting I had researched SMS and if anything the main complaint was that they were slow. I'm finding this is the case but I don't see any other options so I'm fine being patient. I just hope that by the time he gets moving there are still enough people interested to make the order go through.

He got the weave sample done and he said it looks good. I've asked that he send it to me so I can have a look and then we can start moving forward. As I've said before this will be a slow process but I'm willing to stick it out for the proper fabric as I see no other choice. I know you're not complaining or being a hassle, I just want everyone to be clear on the subject. Most of the negative feedback with SMS is how long they take and guys get impatient and quit. Momma didn't raise no quitter!! :D

Great news! I received a picture of the sample from SMS. I'll get a comparison photo up this weekend but I was too excited to not post it right away. Remember that these are obviously not the right colors as the proper colors will be custom died. This was just to get the weave and logo correct. It's hard to tell on the weave though it looks pretty close. The lettering on the other hand is spot on!

Ok, here is a shot of the NOS fabric and then a comparison. The base material looks a little "flatter" to me so I will ask him about it. The letter on the other hand look spot on.

It's not dead, but I told DJ I would man this to keep it moving and haven't made time lately. I think there is still potential given someone agreed to take on the work a while back, but with the time that has gone by, we'll probably need to revisit this with the guy and confirm he's still in business and willing to do it. Nevermind the possibility that those who said they were interested may not be or financially are unable to purchase their agreed upon lot.

Don't give up hope though.
