I got an oil pan I need to remove the sound deadener sheet metal pieces from. I see a few quarter (coin) sized dimples that look like are what attaches them to the pan. Do I just need to grind around the circumference of these in order to remove them?

Yup. I used a Dremel to do it. They are just spot welded in.

An air chisel with a spot weld cutter is what I used. You can drill out the spot welds too just be careful not to go through.

I used a die grinder and that was easy enough. It's amazing how much crap comes out of there.

I ended up using a RotoZip with a cut-off wheel and got two oil pans done today. I too was amazed at the amount of crud that came out.

I'm still having a hell of a time removing the crud, so I think I will bring them into be hot tanked next.

Were these pieces installed into the pan with some kind of acoustic foam? It is treacherous to remove. I'm thinking of breaking out a flap sander to take care of it before bringing them into the machine shop for the hot tank.

The black crap between the oil pan and the inner steel panels is the acoustic sound deadener. It looks like 100 years of gunk but is similar to undercoating.
I chisled it out too and then cleaned up the inner surface of the pan with a scotch brite disc on my die grinder.

Sounds like a good plan.

Whats the point of removing it...and does someone know where to buy it?

Dirt gets trapped behind it. The only way to clean it all out is to remove it.

If installing a baffle system into your oil pan it has to come out anyways.

not just crud, but bearing or other metal pieces get stuck behind it too, when you "think" you've got it cleaned, they some how make there way out to destroy your engine...
