i have 17's with 205 40 zr17 tires and they are very tight but my car is also lowered with coilovers so you may be able to get away with slightly larger tires. my tires are 24 inches in diameter i was gonna go 225 45zr17 they are 24.5 inches in diameter and i'm glad i didn't do that cause they wouldn't have fit. also with the bigger tires you will notice an increase in the turning radius mine can't pull a u-turn on most 2 lane streets anymore. my rims are 17x7 and the tires do rub in a hard turn but not badly i forget what my offset is but its around 40mm with 5.5 inches of backspace.

215/35/18 should just fit. I think there 24.2 diameter and my slicks are 24.5 and they fit.

Why would you want to run anything bigger than 15s on a car that small?

then you probably would want a bigger rim with a low profile tire

Big rims and tires with skinny sidewalls are not that great for handloing. I still say a set of lightweight 15x7 wheels and 205/50 or 225/45 tires would be best on a car that small. Alot of autocross cars will use 13 or 14 inch wheels. The only time you will see bigger wheels on a race car (compareable in size and weight to an l-body) is if they are needed to clear the brakes.

+1 The only reason I would go to a bigger rim would be to clear bigger brakes.

yea they ride like ----, but I had 205/40/17 yokohamas on my 95 s15 and i tried as hard as i could to get them to break loose but I couldnt. They were z rated though. they were a520's i think. ---- i took a turn that was a complete left hand 90* turn and the thing didnt even slide. I guess tires has alot of factor into it though.

Big wheels = more rotational mass.

Are the 17's aftermarket? Aftermarket wheels are lighter because they do not have to pass the same FMVSS test that OE wheels do. 18" RS wheels will fit on a ZX3 if you roll the lips a little (click to make bigger)

Not a diect comparisson bu the 15" aluminum (aftermarket) rims with 255mmx29" tires that I had on my Dakota weigh 40# each. The 17" Dakota R/T rims with 275mmX28" tires weigh 50# each. Acceleration - lost a tenth in the 1/4. Handling, this thing carves curves like MAD!

It all depends on what you're going for and need.
-If it is looks, buy whatcha like and make them fit
-If it is drag racing, try to pick the size that gives you a good launch and does not overrev at the end of the 1/4
-If it is Auto X smaller might be better if you need a better gear ratio
-If it is road racing, bigger air for brake cooling, if you race at the same track a lot I'm sure that there will be one size that will help you balance your gear ratios...

Anything over a 17" is going to look goofy/tacky.. I see little cars running 18"+ from time to time and they looks so stupid. Poor little car wants to be an SUV or something. That said, I have 16" aftermarket tires on my Omni.. 16x7, 4x100 rims. I have 205/40-16 rubber on there.. I think next time I buy rubber I'll move up to 45 to help bring the speedo back into line with reality. :)
