Is the 5th gear on an 89 A520 a bolt on gear like it is in the A555. How can you tell the different years of 520s?

Mines an 88 520, with the bolt on gear. My 525 had a circlip.

I know that on the 523's you can see the date it was made on the tag on the transmission. Should be a circle tag on the top (what you would see if you were looking into the car at the trasmission) of the transmission.

All the manual trannys are supposed to have ID tags on top of them that tell the build date and final drive ratio.

the tag is missing. I'm building a 555/520 hybrid and got my 520 in the other day to find out it had a clip on 5th gear. My 555 has a bolt on 5th gear, so I guess they wont work together.

gotta have the same type pinion shafts...

EDIT: wait a minute... ID the 5th gears by measureing the OD and counting teeth. If they are the same and you dont mind using the A520 5th grears it should work... I have an A555 with the small pitch 5th gears on it - not my choice, i got it that way.

Are you talking the gear on the left or right side? My 520 had a bolt on left gear, clip on right gear.

Interesting. Now, if I do come across an '89 520, it will have a bolt on 5th, right?

Heres a pic of my 88 520 before I totally stripped it. Left shaft is threaded.
