A few have contacted me asking about DSS axles so I thought I would throw it out to see how much interest there is.

What are Drive Shaft Shop axles? One of the few badass axles made that fit our cars. I have used them for year and put them through hell. If you read my project log, yes I've broken a few, but in a heavy car on a 26" tire and a grabby twin disk clutch. I have yet to break one on the 24.5" tire that didnt have 26" tire hits on it. DSS used to carry axles for our cars and no longer do, but they still make and service them. Check out their website www.driveshaftshop.com

They make two levels for our cars:
-Level 3 - 4340 Chrome Moly ends and center bar
-Level 5 - 4340 CM ends with upgrade center bar to 300M

ALL of the axles are unequal length and with a proper alignment, torque steer is not an issue.

They also make two sizes:
-A,E,G,H,J,K,P
-L-Body
***Minivans not yet an option, but if enough interest this may be possible?

Price? List price is on L5 is $1000/pair. If we get enough for the GB, should be $800/pair.

Warranty? They should be covered by their 1 year warranty but this will be confirmed.

Please list as following example:
1. Username - level - size
1. BadAssPerformance - L5 - G

In traditional GB fashion, please copy the previous list ands add your name next. At this point (since we do not yet know the price) your name on the list means you're down for ~$800 set of axles (plus shipping) but all will be reconfirmed once we know the price.

No equal length half shaft axles?

BadAssPerformance
12-29-2014, 01:07 PM
They only sell unequal length sets. I could probably talk them into selling two shorts, but really for drag racing, the U-Joint becomes the next weak link so you would have to eliminate it with a straight shaft

Figured id ask. I like my equal length setup on my car that isnt a race car

Just want to throw this out there, I have a set of L5's and they are killer. I launch my car very hard and they take the power in stride. I called earlier in the winter about getting tone rings installed for traction control and they said no problem just call get an order number and send them in. Great product and customer service.

Aren't the pass axles in equal length setups the same as the driver side?

I need a set of axles for my Lebaron so I won't be scared of running slicks :) but not sure when I could swing $900 for them. Things are going well for me at work, so I'll be keeping an eye on this.

BadAssPerformance

Yes, the PS axle in the equal setup is the same as the DS axle. The weak link is the u-joint yoke

The driveshaft portion of the I shaft is also a weak point...I sheared two of the tubes.

Sounds good. I'll try to find a minute to call them this week.

Since I'm more of a G/P body guy and they have not technically listed the axles for L-body, I would like to take a quick survey for anyone who has know large spline L-body axles already out of the car ready to measure... what is the overall length from end to end. To measure, lay the axle down on a bench or floor, then gently push the inner joint in to seat the spring, then let it relax, then measure the overall end-to-end length. Please post results in this thread.

Sorry guys, long hours at the day job and then every spare moment on SDAC-25... sent the latest issue of Up Front to the printer at 2:30am, so I got a minute to breath today LOL

Lead time?

Anyone get axle measurements yet?

I've been waiting to hear axle lengths from you L-body guys, anyone got any numbers yet?

For L-body, lead time to get them will really depend on the length and what they have available to work with since they don't currently stock them for our cars.

For future orders after the GB, good question, I'll see what I can arrange!

Turbo Joe - Lead time should be better for P-body as I'll spec out the same ones I'm running and they know those.

Also, any minivan lengths?

black86glhs
05-01-2015, 11:13 PM
Sorry JT, I thought you were looking just for the Minivan lengths. I'll try to get both dr and pass side lengths tomorrow.

BadAssPerformance
05-01-2015, 11:24 PM
Thanks Bryan! If anyone else can too, that would be best. I know everyone is using the "1989 Omni automatic trans driver side axle" or whatever had the larger splines on it to fit a A555 or A568, but I've seen a couple different lengths and would like to confirm!

This brings up a good point as well, just to confirm, they only make the large spline diameter to fit A568/523/555/520 and later A413 Automatics.

black86glhs
05-02-2015, 05:09 PM
The driver's side axle length i measured was 24 1/8" to 24 3/16". The pass side measured 38 15/16" to 39".
And these are large spline axles.

RoadWarrior222
05-02-2015, 07:57 PM
A caveat for that, is that one manufacturer was doing a "collapsed mount" versions for vans that was a tad longer, so they didn't pull out of the transaxle on corners..... I want to say they were more like 39.5 to 40 though on the long side, but it's been 8 years since I saw them. But if you're sure you're measuring originals, then we should be good.

black86glhs
05-02-2015, 10:30 PM
These are L-body unequal length RW, not van axles.

Reeves
05-06-2015, 11:45 AM
JT,

22.75" compressed length driver side Lbody
23.50" uncompressed

37.187" compressed length pass side Lbody
38.25" uncompressed

Edit: the above numbers are correct.

BadAssPerformance
05-07-2015, 01:27 AM
Thanks guys.

Reeves, did that 23.5" one fit better than the is that the one it took 5 of us to tag-team in at Norwalk? And do you think 24" would fit?

I just looked up my notes and have some scratch saying the uncompressed length (so the plunger touching the spring but the plunge spring no pre-loaded) should be 24" DS 39" PS

Reeves
05-07-2015, 07:58 AM
JT,
The axles I measured are what was currently in the car. I have some others that I will test fit and measure.

Any idea how long it might take them to make them? I'm just trying to figure out what axles I will need for SDAC25.

BadAssPerformance
05-07-2015, 07:16 PM
If you have spares, especially stockers, please measure at least one more of each
Once we go, lead time should be less than a month

black86glhs
05-12-2015, 11:19 PM

Yeah, WTF!? Seriously...

Sorry for the lack of updates, been a long week at the day job. I'm frustrated as it has taken longer than they originally estimated. And I'm a customer on this one too, ordered a set of SRT4 axles for the Z and I want/need my set as much as any of you want/need yours.

For an update...I've been trading messages with them but haven't got them on the phone live to give them the WTF yet. Last I heard they said they would have half of them ready to ship soon and I left a message back mentioning "how about all of them soon" as politely as I could say it.

I've been trying to get these axles installed but work has been crazy... finally have time today and the axles won't go in. they will go into a stock diff. but the quaife nope. wondering what solution people came up with incase I'm not the only one..

BadAssPerformance
08-17-2015, 12:40 AM
Weird. Brand new Quaife? I was going to put a Quaife in my last trans but went with the OBX I has instead because the Quaife was tight. I thought it might have been a buildup in the splines of cosmolene (sp) or whatever that heavy coating is they put on them so they don't rust in inventory or shipping. Let me know what you find, I'm really curious what could be different?

Also, note to ALL! Once installed, make sure that the convolutes of the CVJ boots are not all bunched up and rubbing on each other. If they rub, they will wear! I've had to scoot the short end down the center bar/shaft a bit a few I've installed.

Anyone else interested in another Group Buy? I asked and can get more at the same discount for another batch.

yes i got them in after a bit of polishing and fine file work. My biggest issue was the quaife diff pass side bearing was about .002-.003 too tight, but I fixed that with a brake cylinder hone.So far axles seam fine..fingers crossed. I did compair them to a set of stock axles I have and they looked exactly the same length uncompressed.

Finally had the time to get them out again and at least try to plug them in to what I have. Found pretty much the same deal, fits into the stock A568 just fine, passenger side is extremely tight fit in the bare Quaife, doesn't go all the way on, tough getting back off. Think I may just need to do a little work on it as Joe described to get it fitting in(and out again).

Dr. Johny Dodge

from a couple of different threads I've read here you need to cut a small piece off the spline end of the passenger side axle , about the thickness of a bottle cap to fit all the way into the quafie as the center inside the quafie is bigger , thus not allowing as much penitration by the axle's splined end into the diff

FWIW, I was not able to get the DSS axles (or any axles) to fit in the quaife I almost put in last year. Tighter splines than the stock or OBX, or just built up rust preventative not sure. Keep us posted.

As far as the axle length, there is a pin in the center of the quaife that I think can be removed. It is really only there for bellvue washer alignment during assembly. If anyone is thinking of cutting a DSS axle, PLEASE let me know, lets contact DSS first to see if they have a preference on method.

JT, did you ever find out what DDS's opinion is on us modifying the axle ( cutting the axle 1/4" shorter on pass side) ?? the seal is VERY close to the edge of the step down so I need to cut it down that 1/4" or so to avoid the possibility of a leak and not compress the axle to much. It's been ok so far but I would like to correct this over the winter, thanks man :)

I did not, but can check.

Do you know the little pin that goes thru the center washer in the quaiffe? From people I've talked with, about 50/50 don't need to shorten the axle. I think the only reason some are is the pin that goes thru the washers is in backwards on some of them. the only purpose of the pins is to keep the washers centered during assembly. I was going to take it out to make it easier to remove an axle stub if it breaks

When would this next group buy be? Also, they can make these to fit a Lebaron w/ a 568 and a OBX diff right? Tax time is coming up, plus I should get a quarterly bonus at work soon, and I may need a set of these if I want to do any hard launches in it on slicks or DR's. Doing a 2.5 TIII swap soon, best guess is the current 2.5 8v was pushing 250whp @20ish psi, TIII will probably add at least 100 to that and who knows what kind of torque.

Also, out of curiousity what is their warranty on these, if any?

If the buy is not for a few months and these can be made to fit the Lebaron, and the price is around what the GB discount guess in the OP is, then I'll put my name in there for a set.

Transmission is still fully disassembled. After work, I will measure how far the passenger axle will drop in the standard diff, and the Quaife. That's the best I can do for now.

MoparStephen
03-04-2016, 09:14 PM
I can't get any useful information with everything disassembled. However, the axle dropped all the way in the Quaife, and bottomed out where the machining for the splines stopped. It sure looks like it went in farther than the assembled unit would let it go, do the the seals. Please keep in mind these are "parts store" replacement axles, so I have no idea if they are factory remans, or generics.

Thanks. OK. BUMP, need more folks to respond,

ALSO - For ALL those running the A555/A568 Quaife - please check the passenger side axle depth. I heard of some that said their axle needed to be cut? Obviously don't want to have to cut your new axles. Is this due to the little belville washer alignment pin? Is this only with the intermediate shaft or with long pass side axle? Do you have a length of the pass side axle that goes into the diff that you used?

I will take a measurement and respond later today. I'm working on the car now. I will tell you this - when I was assembling the transmission, I used a cutoff axle as an alignment pin. I had to hammer it in both sides of the quaife (not beat it, but took 4 or 5 good taps with a 12 oz. ball peen hammer). After doing that, they slide in and out just like they should. I unfortunately will not be able to tell you the overall axle length, because my car formerly had equal length axles, and I ditched the extension.

I verified that the quaife will take both axles I have all the way until they bottom out. From looking at the wear pattern from the seals, I would say they are seating in the same location.

OK, all set to place the order tomorrow.

As far as axle length for the quaife, it is inconclusive about trimming the end of the pass side axle. A555/A568 and A520 (Hybrid) seems to go in OK for most so we'll roll with standard lengths for now.

Awesome - thanks for the update. I had to get mine back on the road, so I grabbed a cheapo $70 passenger axle since I ditched the stub axle. I would have been able to finally make a full throttle pull in 3rd gear, but I had to lift at 5000 since I ran out of road and the car just kept accelerating harder. It should be a fun summer.

I received my DSS axles and when I tried to insert them into my early 3.50FD/Neon T350 Quaife, the driver side went in easily and bottomed out so the seal rides correctly on the sealing surface. However, the passenger side axle would not go in far enough to engage the splines (I tried it on both sides of the Quaife to see if it was the same on both sides, and it was).

In the past I had taken a dremel with a cutoff wheel and ground on the splines on other axles to get them to fit into the Quaife, but I was hesitant to make any modifications to my new DSS axles (warranty issues, etc).

So I pulled the Quaife out of the trans, and disassembled it for inspection. After looking at the gears that mate to the axles, I realized that the passenger axle would insert partially into the gears if inserted into the back of the gear, but not if inserted the way it was intended.

Further inspection showed that the leading edge of the valleys between the splines on the gears were not as deep as the valleys farther back along the splines. The outer face of the gears has evidence of galling where it rides up against the housing of the Quaife. My theory is that the friction on that surface along with the galling has made the leading edge of the spline valleys shallow, so certain axles will not fit into the gear.

Here is a picture of the gear before modification:
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/photopost/data/1011/medium/QuaifeGearBeforeMods.jpg

(OK, I actually started opening up 3 valleys before I remembered I wanted to take a "before" picture)

I took a Dremel with a reinforced cut-off wheel and opened up the leading edge of the valleys.

Here is an "after" pic of the gear:
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/photopost/data/1011/medium/QuaifeGearAfterMods.jpg

(The Dremel/cut-off wheel is not an extremely precise tool in my hands so it is not the prettiest, most consistent job of opening the valleys, but it was effective)

After cleaning up the leading edge of the valleys, My DSS axles as well as all of the other axles I have in my garage slid without resistance completely into both gears.

Now for the issue of the passenger side axle not going far enough into the Quaife:

As I was inspecting the internals, I noticed that one of the inner Belleville washers had wear marks on it from an axle rubbing up against the washer. To be safe, I ordered new Belleville washers (McMaster Carr part #96445K284) which ended up being about .4mm thicker when stacked up than my original washers, so they will have a little extra preload.

I noticed that the two retainers that hold the Belleville washers are not identical, and that one side was recessed while the other was not. So I installed the retainers into the center spacer with the recessed side facing the passenger axle.

When I reassembled the Quaife and tested the axles, the seals on both sides of the diff ride completely on the sealing surface of the axle and appear to be within 1/16" of an inch of fully seated, so there should not be any issues with leaks.

I hope this is useful if your axles won't fit into your Quaife.
