I was wondering if i could hack off my cat converter and run a straight pipe into the muffler? Will i gain a little more power??? or will the engine suffer because of a lack of back pressure? the car is a 90 spirit 2.5 turbo 5 spd (stock). thanks for your help

No cat is better then cat...
You pretty much want no back pressure with a turbo setup.

the turbo gives you all the backpressure you need

The stock cat is very restrictive, remove it or install a high flow unit if you have emissions testing.

Yep, ran an open downpipe for 2+ years... You do not need ANY more backpressure than the turbo provides (more than likely less!!)

When I removed my cat the boost went up 2-3 psi as well. a little louder and more popping on decel.

Haha, I removed the cat on my SC, only to find a pipe run thru the centre of it. Very nicely done. You still can't tell even with it off the car, until you look through it.
My cars have always purred like stock without them, but I'll admit, you do notice a little extra smell from some cars.

does any one run straight pipes from the exhaust manifold all the way out without a muffler?

I ran my old Shelby Z like that for 2 years. Definitely sounded....unrefined, but still quieter than my Bronco! hahaha
My SC only has the cutout closed all the way when I see cops, or when I'm driving with a pretty girl and don't want to bash her in the face with the redneckedness of an open 8" section of pipe. :D

haha exactly! It's definitely not a clean sounding exhaust but it's music to the ears of a turbo lover. Though I have to admit, when I went back to a full exhaust, the silence was deafening

Hemidare did, we both didnt' like it, doesn't sound very good personally and he agreed also.

Yeah it was a bit loud especially inside the car. And it is a DD so it wasnt so cool. I would consider it on a fun weekend driver with a full 3" inch setup and we will see how it sounds.

thats kinda what i figured. hey usually only sound good on V8's. my buddies Bronco had straight pipes all the way out it it sounded bad ---.

I like the sound my 88 has going for it. It's a stock 89 Shelby exhust, gutted cat with no axle pipe or muffler. It's not that loud unless you hammer it and you get the best of both worlds.. a V8ish rumble at idle and the turbo whistle is super loud... and a great new world. The Jet sound at WOT. ;)

Im with you there ShelbyZD. On my 88 Shelby Ive got a high flow cat which basically looks like a straight through if you look in it. The exhaust is stock pipe then back to a healthy low restriction polished stainless muffler. It sounds alot like how he described his. Im wanting to go with a 3.0 SV and DP though in the future. Good luck on choosing the system you want to run. Many possibilities but in the end its up to you to decide what you like the best.
