Building a TIII Short block with FWD H-beam rods. Planning to build a high horsepower motor fed with lots of E85. Planning on doing ARP main studs with stock mains. What horsepower are the stock mains good to and when should I start looking into 4 bolt mains? Are the mains limited by HP or by RPM's? Looking to make around 500whp on the E85, that is all my new 120 lb/hr injectors should be able to handle and more than enough to make my R/T more of a handful.

I know there are many people on here that have built some stout bottom ends, someone please chime in.

I think Reeves at around 500 whp was having main cap walking issues with studs. He switched to a 4 bolt setup IIRC.

When I did my 2.5 I used studs. My machinist line honed the mains for the studs. When I picked it up he said he would've just used an arp bolt instead of the studs. He said the stock caps will walk with either and if you use the bolts you should not need to line hone which saves money. He said there was quite a bit of distortion of the caps with studs...on the order of .0008.

It seems some do and some don't. I did 3 blocks with studs, 2 were ok, one needed honing.
