Sounds like someone in TX is building up a Nice Shelby Dakota:eyebrows: It's gonna have a good cal and brand new wheel centers;) Those heads have a giant hump in the exhaust ports, you can grind out 90% of it without hitting anything:nod:

Yeah buuuuudy. Nothing better than bolt on ponies! Mine needs some TLC for sure, can tell it's been put to work. I uploaded some "as received" photos in a "before" album. Good info re: the heads, I'll remember that when I eventually pull the engine to do a full restore.

The Shelby Dakota 318 has the Mopar '302' head casting. This head has a closed combustion chamber, swirl ports and responds well to minor porting.
Lunati has several cams that work well in the roller 318.

The Mopar '308' head casting is the 1989 360 head. It has huge ports and the best exhaust flow numbers since the 1970's X heads.
This head also has swirl ports, but has the traditional Mopar V8 open combustion chamber. It will cause your compression to drop.

the 308 heads with 1.88 intake valves flow the same as the x head with 2.02 valves, peak with more low lift flow. Then the exhaust is magnum and is 25 CFM roughly more total and a lot more at low lift, used as the MP Commando head 15 years ago.

The stage 2 computer as it is listed here is really not a stage computer at all. I bought one for my Shelby Dakota 1207. It is a bit more aggressive timing wise but the rev limiter sucks. Mopar after this kit dropped the factory replacement cal and replaced it with this cal. Being the 360 TBI uses the same injector as a 318 there is nothing special there either. When you get a TBI for a 3.9 it has a smaller injector in a 318 size TBI.

The "kit" had a Flowmaster 2.5" muffler, 360 TBI and the slightly more aggressive computer. Out of stupidity they tell you to grind the intake, just bolt on a 360 TBI intake. Both intakes are TERRIBLE! So I cut on a 6" x 6." x 1/4" aluminum plate to match the 360 TBI and the 4 barrel top of a Performer intake. The intake uses the early EGR and everything up front, AC compressor etc with the Performer. So big gain in flow and weight loss.

Moving on to Shelgame. You told me you got that cal from Jason years ago? Merkur boy read it long ago to make a copy. Hacking it for fuel and rev limit and temp control would be huge. Even if you use the Holley adjustable reg to level out closed loop the rev limiter still kills you bad. Also want mine to think it is at operating temp at 155 so I can run a cooler stat. Or to have one flashable for the pumping tables. The Shelby Dak would be something then lol.

Google helped me find this info about the Shelby Dakota performance kit on a Dakota Forum:

"1989 Shelby Dakota Performance Kit." P4529979. A minor correction: 20hp, 30lbs torque. It was a 360 throttle body, template to open the 318 intake for the throttle blade clearance, the 360 SMEC, and a low-restriction muffler (looks a lot like a flowmaster). That was it. No headers. It was a direct replacement that used all stock attachment hardware. The 360 computer was a performance version with fatter fuel curves and more advanced ignition spark curves, but I wouldn't sweat that.

Some Chrysler parts web sites show this part number for $700+
Most likely it's an old listing and no longer available.

He did? I don't currently have that Cal ID in my collection. If I did, it would be posted here. The only V8 TBI cal I have is the '528. I have no idea the application for it.

'528 isn't on this list but I found info that shows it is a 1988 3.9 3 speed SMEC.

I sent you an '887 and a '937 today, you should have then early next week.

Thanks, got them yesterday. I'll copy those cals and post them later.

Oh yeah, thanks to Tim and the buyer, I was able to copy the Shelby Dakota cal this morning. PN 4517636 was on the outside of the ECU. Just looking at the cal now, it has the same PN in it.

I'll post all of the V6/V8 TBI cals that I have...

One 5.9 TBI throttle body left.
I have a couple truck SMECs too that would be good cores for a custom cal.

Andy - what all is needed to apply the Stage II Cal? I get asked about it maybe once a month. I honestly know nothing about the Shelby Dakota or Stage II cal.

What is needed to run the Stage II? 360 TBI Throttle? Intake?

What computer(s) can be modified to be a Shelby or Stage II?

ajakeski

The Shelby 318 Performance package consisted of the 4517636 computer, a TBI throttle body from a 360 liter V8 and a low restriction muffler. It also included a template to follow for enlarging the opening in the intake manifold for the larger throttle plates. (And filling the intake with iron shavings.)

I've found that enlarging the manifold isn't necessary for clearance since the throttle body spacer moves the throttle body far enough away from the manifold for needed clearance. I enlarge the holes of a 318 TBI spacer on a taper to the size of the 360 TBI throttle plates.

You can use any 1989 V8 truck SMEC as a core for the Stage II conversion.

The 318 heads and intake have smaller ports than the 360, but the 318 heads flow just as well and have a closed combustion chamber for better quench. With some porting, the 318 heads will out perform the 360 heads. You can also update to Magnum heads. They are available with the older LA (318-360) engine intake manifold bolt pattern and will out perform the old LA heads.

The thing to be careful for is building an engine with an air requirement that is more than the 360 TBI will support. The 360 TBI flows just over 600 CFM. Beyond that, the stock TBI system would be less than adequet.
