Hey everyone, I was wondering what there was for automatic trans options for the 3.0 ? Iam thinking of doing a turbo 3.0 spirit as a street-strip car. I would prefer a non computer controlled 3 speed similar to a old a413. Iam new to the 3.0 scene so please educated me. I searched and couldnt find the info I am looking for. :thumb:

Thanks
Mike

That would be the A670 3 speed auto that came stock on some 3.0 cars and vans. It's basically an upgraded A413 but don't expect it to handle too much torque before it self destructs.

So you have a 604 which is a computer controlled 4 speed correct ?
And a a670 non computer controlled 3 speed

Any other options ?

If you want to make power and go auto the A604 is your only option but have a deep wallet and lots of patience. If you're on any kind of budget the A543 5 speed is the only option I am aware of that will handle power. Others might chime in with some better ideas.

Yes the 604 is a computer controlled 4 speed and the a413/a670 is a classic hydraulically controlled 3 speed.

That's what iam afraid of lol
I don't mind putting some money into the auto but I don't want to dump 2k into one.

I recommend an A543 for anything past bolt-ons. It's not a difficult swap if you can find an entire donor car with a 5-speed.

Iam hoping to pick up a spirit r/t roller so the 5 SPD would be easy.

I don't have a problem doing converter, valve body etc etc.

Either way isn't going to be cheap for me. If I go 5 speed, I have to find everything and buy a good clutch so either way I gotta pay up.

Looks like a 670 or stick for me.
Thanks for the info everyone.

A stock 604/41te has gone 10's in a 1st Gen Neon, around 500+ hp. It can hold it, problem is in tuning the TCM to shift quicker so it doesn't slip so much under power and kill the clutches early. There is no current way of easily doing so, although there are a few options being worked on currently.

I went and read a few of the 604 threads after work today. The 604 does sound great once the tuning is figured out. I now need to deceide weather to go 670 or 5 spd to get the car up and running quickly.

The 670 can hold 'a lot' of power with basic auto trans mods like tighter clutch clearances, adding a clutch disc to the clutch drums, running higher pressures and a shift kit, etc.

People don't really start breaking 3 spd cases until they are running 11s or 10s in the 1/4 mile for the most part (or 13s in an unusually heavy minivan). For a 'mild' 3.0 build, a properly rebuilt 670 is going to handle everything you can throw at it.

The only thing that is holding me back from a 670 build is the lack of od. Iam hoping to make it a mid 12 second car, which I don't think will be too hard with a turbo 3.0,a auto and some traction. The od would be nice though.

Well if you can keep the lockup style converter that will help on the a670.

All 670s came with lockup so it will be there unless you convert it backwards to non-lockup. I dont think running 12s with a good rebuilt 670 will be a problem. As far as the gearing, you can take a 670 and swap a different set of transfer gears on it (which is pretty easy for a trans mod) and it will run the same highway rpm as a 4 spd. Only problem is it makes all the other gears taller too.

Im not pushing the 670 but it's a perfectly viable option.

Thank you for the info guys. I ended up getting a good deal on a srt4 motor so I grabbed that. Picked up the spirit r/t today also. Should be a interesting project. No 3.0 project for now anyway.
