So I recently put 1k miles on the car and popped the hood to check oil and noticed my belt looking worse then I remember a few weeks ago!

The grey hair between covers is belt residue.

Generally speaking, belt too tight, rides inside like yours is, too loose rides outside so have you verified the tension with a belt gauge? Also, just looking at you exhaust gear belt reatainer, it's kinda bent up, is there any significant chunks, dings, or damage that is contacting the belt every time it turns?I've had to fix a couple like that.

I have not, I really need to get one so I can check it though. I know I have a how-to bookmarked somewhere.

As far as damage, nothing that I noticed but I wasn't looking for anything.

Pretty sure the idler mod is causing the wear. Wish I knew what it was. Previous owner I think was unaware of it, the car did come from Cindy so maybe with some searching I can find one.

If the idler mod is not done properly and the pulley is not square to the belt face, you will have an issue like that. Don't ask me how I know...
All of my cars with the belt tensioned properly run toward the outside of the cam pulleys. You can see the witness marks on yours and see that you are running on the opposite edge.

You should change the title of this thread to "how long before I-shaft failure". lol

Running a TIII without properly checking the belt tension is asking for a engine rebuild due to failed I-shaft. Luckily your running on the tight side of the spectrum so you'll be granted a little more time. I would suggest setting the correct belt tension asap. Belt shredding shouldn't be your concern.

Any suggestions on tension tool cheaper then $140 to use?
I am also 250 miles from home though failure of any kind is of the concern
