Now I need to make rods to replace the rear shocks so after they are removed from the car I can still move the car around.

Speedway Motors here in Lincoln rebuilds Bilstein and other brands as well if anyone is interested. I don't know prices as you have to contact them for a quote.

"Please include any info that you would want us to know"... I'm betting this would be a great place to ask for MORE rebound damping, I'm sure they could use heavier fluid or change the valving for next to nothing cost:thumb:

Does this car need more rebound dampening?

Best thing would be to fit adjustable bilsteins and get rid of the current setup.

MY issue is I don't know how much more I'd want as these have been shot since I got the car.
I'll have to try them out, and adjust afterward.

Lol, *every* car pushed hard needs more rebound damping... Ok, that's not an accurate statement, every car that IVE owned does:nod:

I was thinking these cars were made to push hard and were built originally valved accordingly.

Haha. Maybe so but unless your a suspension expert your just throwing money away and guessing.....Remember these cars had a suspension setup by a PROFESSIONAL F1 DRIVER. Good luck trying to one up him on your custom non adjustable suspension.

Why not get adjustable dampening and be done with it. M3 has Bilstein PSS9's and it has more than enough adjustments for my aggressive driving.

Johnny doesn't push his cars anyway.....70 mph on a 25 mph off ramp is barely getting started, lol.

I'll try to swing by on Saturday and ask them about changes in valving or possibly adding external adjustments. They're all of 5 minutes from my place.

I suppose that depends on if the driver was Piercarlo Ghinzani ( 111 races and only earned 2 points ) or Michael Schumacher :D
Who actually designed the suspension?

As for driving hard....well, 80mph on a 35mph ramp doesn't even make the tires howl....or so I've heard ;)

Johnny, When you talk to Bilstein, ask them to give you the specs on the valving when they get them.

I was only able to find the kit and instructions for the 7000 series. Those shocks appear to be "user" rebuildable.
I didn't find any info on DIY rebuilding of the 6000 series, just says that Bilstein can rebuild them.
I've rebuilt motorcycle forks before, not really that hard if you take your time and read the instructions.
Heck, at $75 a piece, that's cheap enough not to even deal with the hassle of trying to do it yourself. I spent that on 1 shock for the duster...
Bilstein, the last shock you'll ever buy ;)

Johnny, Did you ask them how they were valved or what the spring rate is?

Johnny
03-07-2014, 11:41 AM
No I did not. They did not have the springs, so that question is out.
but I can ask if any other info is available.

What truck are you trying to buy the Hotchkis shocks for? They don't make the Dakota kit anymore. I need to send in my Hothckis bilstiens off my Dakota R/T to get rebuilt. They have well over 100K miles on them.

Update....
After taking a 2400 mile trip, these rear shock are NOT valved right.
Way, way too soft. Taking them off and sending them back in for a re-valve.

I had to try them first to see.

They didn't build these right IMO. No one else (to my knowledge) has a problem with there stock rear bilsteins being too soft.

Yep;)

I know..............

I found this to be true on my rear shocks.....

compressed...11"
extended.......16-1/4"
sitting stance..12-1/2

To me this is not enough, only 1-1/2 inches?
I think what happened is the shock bottomed out, wrecking them

I should have a shock like maybe 10-1/8" compressed and 14" extended.
I am going to get this size and try them out.
