Nothing special, but something I worked on the other day, and had a guy TIG up at work (I know I cant TIG this well, so I had him make it *look* as good as it works!).

anyway this is an upper IC pipe in 2.25", 0.065 wall 6061 aluminum tubing. I fabbed to fit a stock GLHS style setup. I made it from a straight piece and a 45 that I split the 45 (so two 22.5 degree bends). It turned out pretty nice, and fit great. Now to add the BOV!

Now brake clean the bead of the weld to get rid of the dusty looking stuff.

Thats where the aluminum heated from the welds:nod:

Then take the tub of mothers mag wheel polish that Im sure you have some were laying around and shine that thing up.

If it's on something like an IC pipe that isn't risking too much structual integrity after a minute or so of cool down time on the weld if I hit it with some brake clean and a clean towel it'll clean that up pretty nicely. I like to do it on intake pipes or IC pipes just for the aesthetic purpose. I'll have to see if I can find my aluminum lap weld demo piece that I did that on to get up a picture.

I think he should install some sort of clamps on the silisone hose before he goes apeshit polishing.

Yeah i do that all the time. Try a poser photo & look at it just before I post it & look for stuff I may get my balls busted for after I post it.

Looks good Clay. Your intercooler pipes are almost exactly like what I have on my Shelby Lancer. For the bottom, I used two 45' mandrel bent aluminum sections. For the top, I was able to use a straight section. I also used the silicone couplers and hump hoses and it works great.

Isnt it amazing how well two mandrel bent 45 sections fit for that bottom IC piping! Thats exactly what I used as well and boy did it work out well!

Yup, even got it to fit under the '90 airbox I had. Haven't tried it with the stock TII airbox yet though. I have a 3" mandrel bent aluminum intake with an open element filter now.

APC filters ownz!!!!!

 Looks good though. I got my balls busted on the poser-shot too.... don't feel bad.

Is there an advatage to using aluminum over steel? Other than the supercoolness? Oh an btw what in the hell were you doing with that foot and a half long extension?

supercoolness, and lightness are probably my deciding factors. I could use steel, and then I could weld it myself, but aluminum (for me) is where its at for IC piping.

as for the extention, I love long extensions. They help to get into places I normally could not using a long extension and wobble socket or universal, AND I can use that long extension and not have to bend so far over, or get right up against something with my hands. Ive got them in 18" and 24" for both 1/4" and 3/8" drives.

I like using aluminum because it's very easy to cut and deburr.

I just experimented with a pipe i found in the yard off of a intercoled volvo wagon. fits perfect off of the turbo over the trans. I will get picts.

aluminum dissapates heat much faster than steel so that is also an advantage.

It can also get heatsoked faster next to the exhaust mani...

Granted, but that's not much of an issue on our 8v's. Aluminum will also shake off the heat soak faster than steel. Consider that IC's are made from aluminum, and the best cooling radiators also.

ok, I made the final version of my upper IC pipe today. Its the same pipe with some improvements :)

Basically machined a flange for a DSM BOV and a boss for an 1/8" NPT alky nozzle. Then had a guy a work TIG em up. Blasted it, and this weekend Ill have it powder coated by a local guy. I think Im going to have it coated the same color as this valve cover, which is a "chrome" coating.

So what do you think about this color?
