So I had a starter problem, and I was told that the Nippon starters need a heatshield. Instead of going to the JY and grabbing one, would it work to use one of these:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/DEi-010402-Versa-Shield-Universal-Starter-Heat-Shield-7-x-24-Inch,71026.html

I also thought about adding a turbo blanket later too:

Do these sound like good measures? Even if I get just the starter cover, will I stop frying starters?

The starter blanket is exactly what I was talking about yesterday. I've never had a starter fail.

I figured, I had just read some other conflicting reports from other forums about how effective a wrap is. And I did see a picture of the heat shield I'm missing, so I wanted to go this route rather than trying to find one in a yard somewhere

Nice, I bought the Speedway one because we have one local and suprisingly they had the best price compared to local parts stores, but that one looks identical without the DEi logo, and with a better price.

It is nice to have a true speed shop locally. :)

As long as you have a Chevy, or one of them roundyround cars

There's plenty of things we can use if you look hard enough.

Well f*** me sideways. The starter had been fine for about a week, then at Kaleb's it stopped working. I drove it to Shelby, then to Omaha, then home. Around Omaha the car started making one hell of a racket. Find metal shavings all over the spark plug side of the engine (I don't have a trans plate). Turns out there's a nice gouge in the nose cone, and I have a strong feeling Advance isn't going to honor their warranty on the starter even though it quit working well before the noise was made.

Ray if you read this, I need to grab that pressure plate from you some time this week. I have a feeling mine got way worse.

I also have a stack of flywheels if you need one. One is even turned and ready if needed.

I have plenty of inspection covers too. ;)

I was thinking about it, and I'm fairly certain one or more pressure plate straps or rivets broke and were whipping around and hit the starter. I've been suspecting the reason my clutch was dragging and the vibration had increased was because the pressure plate had a bent strap and it moved the face off center

After an absolute nightmare trying to get this starter exchanged, not because they wouldn't, but because they didn't know how with an online order (apparently no different according to the regional manager), I finally got in another NipponDenso starter (the first one ordered from Salina, KS was a Bosch in the Nippon box) and trimmed by heat wrap to fit. Hopefully this will help the starter live.

Provided all your wiring is in good shape, I think you'll be a lot better off with this one.

Trust me, wiring is fine. I ran a new wire from the plug to the solenoid, it's all soldered. Every time I've had an issue with the starter, I pull it out and test it with some jumper cables and the battery, it always fails.
