After reading a recent post by Chris, quoted below, I'd like to see how many people we can truly get interested in one of these. Chris is a valuable contributor to our community, can we get enough support for another round of headers to be made?

"In regard to our cast iron headers, it took 4 years for us to sell 90 of them with good feedback on the forums. Someone with our first generation Stainless Steel welded hybrid header purchased a generic turbo off EBay and ran it in their L-Body for several years. When they transitioned it to their P-Body they ran into clearance issues with their brake booster. TU guarantees all our headers will work with TU turbos. We cannot be held responsible for fitment issues when a customer purchases his turbos elsewhere without checking for clearance. Whenever there were inquiries on the message boards regarding the second generation cast iron header this person would chime in and discourage people from buying it based on his experience with his first generation welded Stainless version. We fought back trying to explain they were two different header designs but the bashing was allowed to continue. Our sales dropped off even worse. We were nearing the end of our first run of 100 so we just decided to discontinue the product. We invested a significant amount of money into the multi step port design, flow testing and final production for these but with all the unwarranted negativity we just felt frustrated with the drama and lack of support. A couple of times I promised to bring the header back if we could get a minimum of 40 pre-orders but we have always fallen short. The challenge is still there. If someone else wants to do it I will offer up a free header for their troubles.

Thanks,

Chris-TU"

I've got interest in at least one for my Consulier, anyone else who is interested please chime in or PM me. The criteria is as follows (according to Chris):
"We would need 40 commitments on the message board. Once we reach the magic number all those who committed need to come through with a deposit of $100. Production will be delayed until all deposits have been collected. When I contact the foundry and machinist I will get their best guess on eta so we will have some sort of final shipping date. If that's acceptable to everyone here I will agree to start the research.

Chris-TU"

Good question, in the original thread I said I'd take two if similarly priced to the original. If cost of production went up $35. or $50. I'd still be in for two.

*UPDATE*

Foundry unit price increase is $20 apiece plus additional metal surcharge of $5. total increase is $25.

Using the original $425. price of the header that puts us at $450. without pricing from our machine shop. I did hear from them though and they said they still had the fixtures and he would get back to me with a price soon.

NOTE: Current eta on Foundry is 4 weeks. My machinist slow time is just before the Christmas Holidays so we would need to place this order quickly with the foundry so the castings would be completed before this window of opportunity. The sooner we get to 40 the more likely these will be completed without a delay. If we wait until the first of the year my machinist will have to schedule it between jobs which will delay things.

Chris, is there a way we could get some 3'' sv at the same time (or close) ?

We do have about 100 of the 3" dual pattern swingvalves in stock and already machined. The issue we have is obtaining the swingvalve mechanism so we can press them in and start shipping. All the vendors we have contacted are requiring minimum of 1000-2000 units based on our specs which will drive up our costs. We recently found a company that can provide quantity 100 "standard" specs and we will work on upgrading them to our "standards" (ie. Larger sealing puck and shaft bushing).

Spoke with our machinist today. Price increased by $25. so new headers would be $475. Once we reach 40 participants on the list we will require $100. Deposit from each person. Balance of header payment would be required within 30 days of headers being completed or you forfeit your deposit. If we can't produce headers in 3 months and anyone wants out the deposit is fully refundable. Hope that makes sense. If not ask questions.

For those of you on the "other" message boards please share this update.

Thanks!

:eyebrows::eyebrows:Okay Im in Im buying 2. When Chris TU first made these I bought one of these Headers, it is a work of art it is a step Design this help cylinder draw from cylinder 4. This thing is build like a Mac truck my grand children will still be using these after Im dead and gone. I fell on hard times a year ago and decided to sell my car Shelby924 first thing to go was the TU cast Iron header along with GT30 DBB turbo and my TU purple clutch. Then times got better for me luckily I did not sell the car. I am currently building it back to run in the 10s with a huge ported G head and 8 point cage. I called Chris to Order another Header and thats when I found out he has not had any for 2-3 years. I do not want a custom tube header I could make one but the Step Header Design In my opinion is better in flow and will never crack or warp. After I fitted My TU cast Iron header I had it coated. Not by TU and the coating flaked off. This time I will fit the headers and have TU coat it with the Flame ceramic coating they offer. I still had a TU stainless log header that I had TU coat its 6 years old coating still holding up to bad I sold it before I knew TU was out of the Ultimate Cast Iron header. Dame it now I have to make a stainless LOG to run before these Ultimate step headers are finished. If any of you have a car with a bunch of Hi end parts on them but they are slower than you think they should be take my advise add your self to the list and buy this header.

Okay Im now off my soap box. Before you ask NO IM NOT GETTING A DISCOUNT FOR THIS INFOMERCIAL but if you don't I will continue to waste you at the track with mine. When it comes

THIS ADD IS AMOPARACER APPROVED PS your engine will look like my Avitar if you don't buy one of these TU ULTIMATE CAST IRON HEADERS.!!!!! :eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows: :eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows: :eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows::eyebrows: :eyebrows:

This header flows 2X better than stock if you want your car to rock you need this manifold.

Well, it's not quite double but we appreciate your enthusiasm Lynn :)

Going off of memory here are the lbs per min flow numbers:

Stock exhaust manifold un-ported= 325
Stock exhaust manifold ported (several tested from multiple vendors)= 335 (+3% flow)
Alabama Man Standard Log design header= 355 (+8.5% flow)
Turbos Unleashed Stainless Steel Hybrid Turbo Header (relocated turbo flange) = 397 (+18% flow)
Turbos Unleashed Cast Iron Hybrid Turbo Header with Step Design= 484 (+33% flow)

I'm really surprised by the small gain using a ported Chrysler manifold.
If I knew that I would have kept the stock unit.
Unless the +3% hides something else, I do not understand why members and even vendors port the stock manifold.

moparzrule
12-26-2013, 12:56 PM
Total flow isn't everything. When under 300whp (where a ported stock is most useful), the largest gain when the stock unit is ported correctly is increased velocity for faster turbo spoolup. This increases low and mid range power a decent bit over the stock unit. There will also be top end gains from the increased flow.

I don't think my ported stocker was tested in that 3% figure, and personally I'm pretty sure mine are more than 3%. But with that said, ~3% is going to mean 10whp on a 300whp setup. That's not insignificant for one mod that costs a little over $100.

In my personal testing my ported stocker spooled the same turbo to full boost 300 RPM faster than a forward motion ported unit. Just looked at forward motions' approach, I could tell that it was all ported for flow and that port velocity was not even considered.

Again, to clarify, a ported stock is most useful on 300whp or less setups. TU's header is really designed to have the most gains for over 300whp applications. There may be some gains in the 250-300whp range with a TU header, but IMO not justified by the cost UNLESS you are planning future upgrades (which happens a lot).

nvysion
12-27-2013, 12:35 PM
Thanks for your help.
In your post you are talking about port velocity, does that correspond to the exhaust gas speed ?
In this case, the more you port, the more you increase the area for the gas, the more you reduce the gas speed (for a constant flow though which is nearly the case at +3%).
Can someone clarify this please ?

moparzrule
12-27-2013, 05:14 PM
Velocity, yes the speed/efficiency in which the air moves through the port. Air is a fluid, anytime you can spiral flow a fluid it will move faster in a given port size (and actually flow more because of the increased efficiency).

TU's header increases port velocity in a different way though. It's a step tube design in which the tube size increases after each port is added into the flow. This design is good for port velocity and does wonders for flow (as indicated by the 33% increase). It's pretty much the best of both worlds, you can only do so much with porting a stocker which is why I recommend the TU header above 300whp applications (though because of it's design it's OK to run on 250-300whp applications but the gains will be minimal).

You can push more air at the turbo with a better header or correct porting. The TU headers takes advantage of porting and cams raised exhaust flow.

In simple terms when you can push a turbo harder, you can run a bigger turbo for racing or have better response on the street with a larger turbo. The real gains come from the larger turbo you can push, not the direct flow like headers on a V8.

Just thought I would post an updated list. I replaced 168glhs1986's spots #3 and #4 with daver and errol, and also added 86seeS. I left ajakeski at #6 because I didn't see a post from him anywhere to be removed..

Sure would be pretty nice to have one of these headers to go along with my new big plenum intake from lengel..

Chris,

Ok, Ok - put me on the list for one of the Cast Headers.

Best Regards,

Steve

NOTE:

There is no financial commitment to add your name onto this list. We have spoken with several serious buyers who tell us they are waiting for us to get closer to our goal number before they add their name mainly because they thought there is a $ deposit required. Once we reach 40 participants on the list we will then require $100. deposit from each person. Balance of header payment would be required within 30 days of headers being completed or you forfeit your deposit. If we can't produce headers in 3 months from when we initiate build and anyone wants out the deposit is fully refundable. See my post # 23 in this thread for more information regarding pricing, etc. Hope that makes sense.

If not ask questions.

What is the estimate price for the header ?

Keito
02-12-2014, 12:06 PM
From Post #14

Foundry unit price increase is $20 apiece plus additional metal surcharge of $5. total increase is $25.

Using the original $425. price of the header that puts us at $450. without pricing from our machine shop. I did hear from them though and they said they still had the fixtures and he would get back to me with a price soon.

Chris W
02-12-2014, 12:56 PM
Update with machinist pricing included:

Spoke with our machinist. Price increased by $25. so new headers would be $475. Once we reach 40 participants on the list we will require $100. deposit from each person. Balance of header payment would be required within 30 days of headers being completed or you forfeit your deposit. If we can't produce headers within 3 months time from when 40th deposit is received and anyone wants out the deposit is fully refundable. Hope that makes sense. If not ask questions.

For those of you on the "other" message boards please share this update.

Thanks!

The closer we get to 40 the more people that will join in. You are not the only one who is hesitating to put their name on the list for similar reasons. If you would just add your name anyway with a short note about your situation it might inspire others to do the same and we can begin production sooner. As you can see we have already pulled out parts of the mold and are ready to go. We are just waiting on you. :)

Just to be sure, this will have the dual pattern flange (Chrysler/T3) and comes with the extension hardware for the drain-back and other line (as still shown on the TU site). If this is the case, I will take 2 of them. I have been a day late and a dollar short too many times to miss out again.

It would be impossible to produce these for both Chrysler and T3 turbine housings as they each require different flange angles.

If you want the t3 style we can sell you the header without the flange machined. This way it can be made to fit whatever turbine housing you want to use.

If you want the t3 style we can sell you the header without the flange machined. This way it can be made to fit whatever turbine housing you want to use.

Chris-TU

That certainly opens up some interesting possbilities!
I'm on the fence if I should grab another.
I better get it figured out though before I can't make the decision without "approval"! :(

Okay, have a couple questions. Think this is Chrysler flanged with option of unmachined flange for Ford Style? Just wanted to confirm that. Chris you mentioned Ford flange needs different flange angles? I assume this is if using your 3" swingvalve, as donut angle would not be correct? Using ATP V-band swingvalve this would be a non-issue I would surmise.
How about clearance in L-body for 3 & 4" TO4E or GT series compressor covers? Enough room for turbo inlet? Heater hoses clear big compressor covers. Any pics of L-body installs. Top side is what I'm concerned about. Not being negative, just want to know how it fits in tight engine bays.
Thanks,
Todd

Todd,

If you compare both style turbine housings you may notice the Chrysler versions slopes down considerably after the exhaust flange surface while the Ford style continues straight out. Because of the Ford's design it will become a challenge for wastegate rod clearance with the intake when using any style swingvalve. Even worse though is the close proximity of the hot turbine housing in relation to the intake manifold. Your boosted air will be subjected to more radiation heat which will negate all of your intercoolers efforts. In order to compensate for the lack of slope it is necessary to angle the header flange so the body of the turbine housing is further away from the intake. Our dual pattern 3" swingvalve will function properly as long as the correct angle is machined into the header flange. While the initial cost of the ATP swingvalve itself might sound attractive once you add in the cost of an O2 sensor bung, welding, unique downpipe and flex pipe the final costs may actually come out the same or even more. It really comes down to personal preference.

We have completed both 4" inlet GT30s and the 3" inlet T04E Hybrid installs in L-Bodys using our cast iron hybrid header and TU 3" swingvalves.

The GT30 install was completed by T-M member A.J. in member T-Bohn's '86 GLHS. When I spoke with A.J. today he did not recall any unique issues regarding compressor cover, air inlet hose or heater core line clearance. The only hiccup he recalled was one of the custom Braided Steel turbo coolant lines needed to be adjusted, but, that was easily resolved. I have attached a few photographs of work in progress but none of them are close ups of the turbo to firewall/brake booster. Perhaps T-Bohn may be able to snap a couple of pictures for you.
492024920349204

The second example is a Shelby Charger that has a T04E Hybrid installed. Once again no clearance issues anywhere.

Hope that answers all of your questions.

DetroitTurbo

Chris, I'm assuming due to the placement of the turbo being moved, the turbo-to-block brace no longer works and will require a custom piece. Correct?

will this work with a rod shifted transmission?

Most likely not as the downpipe is relocated in the path of one of the rods. I have heard that some have been able to get around this. Not sure if they modified the downpipe, shift linkage or a little of both. Since we have not seen or completed this ourselves we are reluctant to advertise our header for rod shifted transmissions.

There is actually a second threaded transmission bracket hole just to the left that lines up with the turbo support bracket when using our cast iron hybrid header. It might be slightly off and the oil return tube is real close but the bracket can easily be modified to make it work. Honestly, since we designed the header extra beefy using the bracket isn't really necessary, but if you can make it work it's always good insurance.

Ah ok, I just don't like the idea of that much weight on the back of the cylinder head. I made a 1/4" thick brace from stainless steel bar, so if the oil return is too close I can always notch that and it will still be strong.

Correct, slight notching of the support bracket for oil drainback tube clearance would be necessary.

What's the difference between machined and not machined?

Since we are only 4 away (SOOO CLOSE), I need to be sure we are all on the same page with this. The thought is, that the flange is actually machined flat (flycut or ground), it is just not drilled and tapped for a specific turban housing.
Chris is this how it will be done?

Header to cylinder flange will be pre-machined and drilled. Header to Turbo flange will not be machined, drilled or tapped.

Correct, unless the buyer requests machined flange and no holes drilled or tapped.

LOL! I know, was just playing along.

Regarding the turbo mating flange it may be best to machine the flange angle based on which turbine housing you will be using. Remember, Chrysler housings have a steeper slope than most others as we already discussed. You may run into intake interference problems if you use the same surface angle

Not to complicate this any further but, I have to ask Chris specifically and anyone else who has used this header. When designed (I assume), you placed the turbo where it had the most clearance possible for say a TU hybrid or other water cooled cartridge. Do you think that with just an oil cooled/lubed turbo, more clearance might be gained by changing the angle of the flange (a reason not to machine the flange)? If not machined is there enough material to change the angle several degrees (rotating the cartridge away from the firewall)?
I just want to ask as many questions possible for everyone's benefit. I have the ability to machine the flange but, I probably will not change my current request.
The "drill and tap" is just a subconscious habit from doing hole callouts on drawings.

Intake clearance is more of a concern then firewall when using Ford style housings as all body types have already been tested using Chrysler wet bearing TU Hybrid turbos. Additional firewall clearance can be achieved by machining down header and/or turbine housing flange. Clearance issues are directed more towards compressor cover and turbine housing choices as the cartridge is always smaller.

suposedly the down pipe is one issue as this manifold moves the turbo toward the driver's side

Many already know but for the sake of those that don't, there are two major difference between the Chry T3 and the standard T3: the inlet flange shape and drill pattern, and the housing shape.

I think where the confusion still lies is if you plan to use with a standard T3 turbine housing the header flange will need to be cut at a different angle relative to the head flange.
49531
The flange above would be more wedge shaped (less flange thickness at the bottom) and I suspect the bolt holes would be drilled perpendicular to the new surface.
As Chris mention the Chrysler T3 turbine housing is shaped different than the standard (Ford) T3.
49532
This is a Chrysler style housing and you can see the angle immediately after the header flange. The standard T3 the housing is more strait.
http://www.turboneticsinc.com/store/image/cache/data/T3%20T4/T3_T4E_5_BOLT_DISCHARGE-500x500.jpg

Hope this helps and not confuses more. If you plan to use with the stardard T3 and you don't get the header flange machine differently, you may have clearance issues with your intake manifold.
(And just for clarfication that picture shows the thermal coating which is extra.)

Chris W
04-08-2014, 12:03 PM
^ What Wayne said.

Just machining the surface flat won't help those who intend to use a standard T3 housing. A sharper angle in the header to turbine housing flange (thicker top, thinner bottom) is required in order for the snail portion to clear the bottom of the intake manifold. Options being offered for this header are machined, drilled and tapped turbine flange for Chrysler bolt pattern or un-machined, drilled or tapped.

Can I understand something. Why can't Chris meet us with the other 2 and stock it on his shelves as stock. Whadda say Chris? Let's get this going already.

TU never really broke even with the first batch of cast iron headers. It's very challenging to gauge this market. We had sold a considerable amount of first generation stainless steel headers so making a cast iron version seemed like the logical choice. Overall, The CI header was a much better product. It incorporated the step design and flowed considerably better then the welded version. They were cast extra beefy so cracking was never really a concern. Best of all our costs were reduced so we could drop the price by $125. from the first generation version. Looking back though it wasn't a very good business decision for us to make these. It was a huge investment and took us over 4 years to sell only a fraction of our welded version.

With the renewed interest we are optimistic that we will reach the 40 pre-orders. The reason we are not flexible with the 40 commitments is we are not willing to risk company assets which could be directed to other viable products. Once we reach our goal though we do intend to manufacture slightly more headers then the 40 for our shelf stock. Price will most likely go up for those extra headers and there may be no option for an un-machined flange.

we're there. Chris was Wright :D, I was lurking waiting to see if you all still move on these group buys like the old folks on bingo night. so let's go already, I want this on my car THIS SEASON! :bounce2:

:bounce2::bounce2:THANK YOU X.GEN for coming through for us. Let's see how quickly we can receive the deposits so we can get this thing going.:bounce2::bounce2:

A Hybrid Header Group Buy deposit item has been added to our site here:http://turbosunleashed.com/shop/cast-iron-hybrid-header-group-deposit-p-318.html.

Please place an order and don't forget to select configuration type in the drop down box if you would prefer Chrysler style Surfaced, Drilled and Tapped or Un-Machined. WE PREFER CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS. Our website may automatically add shipping but all Credit Card orders will be manually processed at $100. If you cannot order with CC and choose Pay Pal instead, payments are automatic so any shipping overage will be refunded within 24 hours. Balance of header payment ($375. plus shipping) would be required within 30 days of headers being completed or you forfeit your deposit. If TU can't produce headers in 3 months from when we receive the last deposit and anyone wants out the deposit is fully refundable. If anyone wants to bail out while we wait for the deposits to come in there will be no penalties other then the harassment you will receive from your peers. See my post # 23 in this thread for more information regarding pricing, etc. Hope that makes sense. If not ASK QUESTIONS.

You may post that you paid but DO NOT re-create the list and add "Paid" next to your name. From this point forward we will be posting the "Official" paid list so there is no confusion. Please be patient as we will update as often as possible through the day.

Our website is not set up for non-shippable items like deposits. Minimum weight is 1lb for each item. No worries though, as indicated above we process all Credit Card transactions manually so you will only be charged $100. If you choose to use PayPal, additional shipping charges will be refunded to you with 24 hours.

Thanks!

You did not include your screen name in the comment field, but, if you are from Woodlands, TX and your initials are FH it came through perfectly with a Chrysler Flanged turbine side. AND YOU WERE # 1 TO PAY! THANKS!

No problem. Shipping overage has already been refunded to your PayPal account and you were #3 to pay! THANKS!

Alan, Based on other customer's experiences I already have your problem figured out. Wait about 3 hours until you are fully sober and then give it another shot.

Chris, not sure if anyone asked - if I decide after the deposit to add the coating, is that a problem?

Chris, not sure if anyone asked - if I decide after the deposit to add the coating, is that a problem?

Not a problem. We have a thermal coating section on our website so that can be added at a later date. It's always best to test fit and clearance your header before it's coated though. Core shift can be present in any cast product which could require removal of header/intake material for proper fitment.

Thanks!
