Looking for information on what type of engine mounts were used axles and things like that. I love omnis and like the vw diesels and that's about the only thing I like of vw but don't like the rabbit or any of the electronics or lack there of in a vw car. So I'd like to swap a 1.6 or 1.9 diesel in. Anyone know if the 1.7 mounts and such will bolt to the 1.6. How far off are trans bell housing bolts are from a vw as well? Any info would help. Thanks. Might get some hate for this one.

There's a guy that swapped a VW diesel into a Rampage, I think the thread about it is on another forum though. Some kind of salt flat racing forum.

Here is the link to that build: http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,10625.0.html IIRC, he said the gas motor mounts go right on the diesel, and it bolts in. Be warned, you need the VW transaxle and specific axles, because they are different from the Mopar ones. I believe Chrysler called it the A-412 transaxle IIRC from reading my FSM. It was a weird transaxle, the clutch actuator went through the input shaft, and the inner CV joints bolted to flanges on the diff.

1.5 1.6 1.7 & (?1.8?) blocks are all the same.

There was also a 5 speed VW sourced transaxle (460?) 1.5 1.6 1.7 & (?1.8?) blocks are all the same. The 460 is the Chrysler 4 speed. The a 465,525, and 555 were based on that original design. I wasn't aware of Chrysler ever using a 5 speed VW trans, but I could be wrong...

From what little i know, the manual trans was a VW unit adapted to the chrysler car, whereas the auto was a chrysler unit adapted to the VW motor.

I want to do this exact same thing with an early L-body 2dr with the cool taillights and the extra quarter panel window. :D

I had a rabbit diesel I threw a turbo on. It ran well and I ran mostly old oil as fuel. I hated everything but the motor in the car tho.

Well, thats where a nice 2-dr l-body comes in, at least in my plan. :p

I'm fine with a 4 door car. They are cheap to get ahold of

Yeah, cheaper than a nice early 2dr for sure. Seems like a vw-motor omni is worthless even if it's super nice, but a really nice early 2dr is worth 3500-4500 regardless of motor. At least, that's what i've been seeing.

We're not into these cars to make money anyways. I just want another diesel. I liked the diesel. I ran 28lbs thru it with one of are Mitsubishi turbos strapped to it and next time will use an even bigger turbo. I got 40mpg at those boost levels.

It is a VW 020 transmission with whatever external mods were needed to fit the chrysler platform.

Means I should be able to grab an o20 or newer trans and use the axles and mounts for the old maybe haha

I wonder if that's true... I wonder if the case was different to accept a chrysler mount or anything like that.

Im just talking about buying INTO one. :p I have a hard time thinking about spending 4k on an old FWD mopar that needs a motor swap to be cool. I just bought my wife an 07 Prius for 4500 and i spent 4500 on her 06 Magnum before that. Im holding out for that kind of awesome deal on an early vw-motor 2-dr, but they're so rare at this point it's probably a dead end to think im gonna run across one in good condition for cheap.

^ Thanks for that!

After seeing that gearing... I'd rather have the auto for a TDI project. That way i can get gearing tall enough to run a proper L-body size tire and have reasonable freeway RPM.

Best part of a rabbit diesel was the "Rabbit injection" badge.

I'm unsure what gear ratio my rabbit had but it would cruise down the highway at 80 without revving to high. A rabbit diesel without a turbo has a hard time doing 80 haha. My question would have to be will the 1.7 drive flanges for the omni bolt into the vw020 trans. If they will my trans options will be much greater and could even use an early 5 speed if I wanted. Not really needed with all the torq tho. If they bolt in the swap would be a lot easier
