View Full Version : 2 piece upper plenums

lengel

Seems to be some interest in these upper plenums. I would need to sell 10 plenums to do this batch. They will be $325 + shipping, and I will need a $120 non refundable deposit for all 10 plenums to get started. When I receive 10 deposits the aluminum will be ordered. Once the aluminum is delivered, I will give my self 3 months to complete all orders (could be sooner but no later). The Buyer will have 30 days to pay the balance upon completion. After 30 days the plenum will be sold to recover my costs. These will all be the same design as the plenums I did in the past. The buyer will be responsible for adding any vacuum/sensor ports. The plenum has a .25" wall so it can be drilled and tapped anywhere on the plenum. So lets see a show of hands of who wants one. Only post if you are 100% committed to buy one. Here are some pics if you have not already seen them. After we have 10 committed buyers I will post deposit info. I will be stating this same group buy on the other site, so if you post here dont post over there. This will just keep me less confused.

Thanks Jeremy! Yes they are made to use a 58mm TB. I dont see why a FWD rail wouldnt work, but maybe Cindy could answer that for sure. You would see the best gains by porting the lower. Steve Menegon just got done / or is just finishing up porting some from the last ones I did. If we get thses going, I would get ahold of him.

Woot! So there are at least two more interested users in this. I know all too well how it's best to have patience in a product like this, especially considering the niche market of turbo Mopardom. More people getting on this = better.

Looking forward to this. If it takes two months or two years that is OK with me considering the quality of Adam's work which I can vouch for with the other parts I've gotten from him over the last few years. I've bought TIII timing belt tensioners (and idlers pullies!), TIII intake manifold flanges, gauge pods for Spirits, Maserati 16v thermostat housings, and CNC ported 58mm throttle bodies from Adam and have been VERY happy. We are talking no-holds-barred quality work here. If you are considering a nice intake for the TII you are seriously missing out if you don't get in on this.

I'm especially thankful that Adam made the TIII timing belt tensioners because they are now unavailable from the dealership and the ones Adam makes are way better than stock. This guy is capable of great things and he is supporting our hobby big time with the time and work he is investing in these parts!

Thanks for the interest guys, and nice words. If we do get 10 for the groud buy, I would not be able to start these till late fall/winter. This is due to work getting VERY busy. So if that still works for you guys, I will start taking deposits once we reach 10 people. That way I will have all the aluminum, and can start asap once work starts slowing down a bit.

Being out of the loop for a while, could someone point me to some usage data/testing.
I'm interested in one, thinking MeanMini might need it with the new turbo and TU header.

Also, if I were interested in one for (hypothetically speaking) a rwd application, could the TB flange be mounted on the opposite side? It appears everything is symetrical.

glhs727
09-19-2013, 02:17 PM
yes, our rail fits! so if you already have an FWD rail, you are fine. In addition I had some other rails made a long time ago, turned out the way we did the regulator mount, it interfered with the stock 2 piece upper, so we ended up putting them aside. I pulled one out of the box and it fits great, So I will put them On my site as a fuel rail for the lengel intake and put them on sale for $119 if anyone wants one! remember all out 2 piece rails will fit either the stock lengel intake, but the lengel rail will ONLY fit the lengel intake! http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc7/srt403/029_zpsd47cd836.jpg

Yeah the end caps can be welded on either side, so thats no problem. I would just have to know how you want it before welding

I know there are a few different 52mm TB castings. They all have the same bolt pattern, but I am unsure of the vacuum nipple. As long as your 52 has the vacuum nipple going straight up it will work fine. You can pick a 52mm TB very cheap ($20 or less) if yours will not work.

I personally never installed one, but the only things I can think of that will have to be done is sensor/vacuum holes drilled and tapped, run your intercooler piping over to the new TB location, maybe lengthen AIS and TPS wires. I dont know about the throttle cable. I wouldnt see why it couldnt just be lopped around. It should be long enough since the TB is closer to the fire wall.

I was just comparing your upper plenum to a stock 2-piece intake in my 2nd bedroom (the staging/museum room). I would be surprised if the TPS/AIS wiring would need to be lengthened at all. That is with using the 58mm CNC-ported Chrysler throttle body I also got from lengel (which fits soooo perfect!)

I wish I could post pics of it installed, but I'm not that far yet. However I see no issues regarding the TPS/AIS wiring. The plenum appears to sit a tad bit lower, and the throttle body will face the driver's side, but the overall throttle body is so close to stock... Should plug right in!

I know this thread has been pretty quiet lately.
But, I was looking at my plenum and checking the fit of my 52mm TB and found the TPS plug points directly to the plenum. No way the plug will attach.
So, is the 58mm TB different in that regard?
Is there a TPS sensor that works but has a 90 deg plug?
Or is the plug simply installed backwards to make this work?

Looking at installing this in the next week.
The cables for the throttle and the trans usually hang on a bracket.
There seems to be no way to hang this bracket...and even if it could,
the angle being 90 degrees off seems to make an issue.

AND of course the question above, holes for vac lines?...anyone do this yet?

lengel
05-20-2014, 07:43 PM
There may be some modification needed to the cable bracket if you run a silicon 90 right on the TB. I seen one guy use a straight coupler then a mandrel 90 bend. It didn't look like he needed to modify the bracket. As for the vac/sensor ports. that is left up to the end user to put in where needed. Any place on the plenum will be fine for this since the pieces used are .25 thick. So just drill and tap where needed.

If you're not using a kickdown cable you can slice a bit off the throttle bracket to clear the 90

Using an 88+ turbo or 3.0 V6 cable and bracket should clear a 90 no problem.

I made it as far as glass beading mine today in preparation for paint...

Sorry I'm so slow. Hope to have mine installed on Mini in the next month or so.

No more ugly vacuum block!

Johnny you might want to break off that pipe worm before you button things up.
At a later time if that piece of thread shaving breaks off, it'll end up in a cylinder.

Oh... it looked like a piece of aluminum from drilling or threading.

is this on your consouler johnny?

Johnny
06-04-2014, 01:15 AM
Yes it is the Consulier.
Got the throttle body gasket today so installed it.
The throttle cable bracket is for an auto, and do not need that part so
cut off the too long part so it would fit with my 90 degree silicone elbow.
See photo F for bracket too long....photo C for the photo with the bracket cut to fit.

But as you can see, now the air box is in the way. (photo D)

Also an issue on my car ....(photo E) this set up makes the need to extend the throttle body plugs.

Only thing I am not sure of is how to deal with the air filter.

Wow looks good Johnny! Looks like two bends welded together should get you over to the air box.

Roof scoop!

50393

Always did like this idea, kinda F1-ish...

Scoop to a basic panel style K&N, might not be too hard to fab up, especially if you could use an existing scoop from the MR2 or Fieros, no idea on cost though...

find a 1990 8v turbo airbox to use instead.

87-89 airbox

90+ airbox

That is if you want to run a factory style airbox. The 90 setup allows you to run a straight pipe to from the i/c to the TB without necking down to go through the airbox. It also has inlets and outlets that have the same area as a 3.5" diameter pipe so it flows more air. Sounds like you put a big cone filter on the car with this setup.

Also why are you running a 52mm TB? I thought these plenums were set up for 58's??? You might also want to find a 52 from a 3.3 V6 (if you don't/can't change up to a 58) as they have the same vac ports as the Turbo's. The 52 with ports in the center bosses are ported vac, where the 52 with a port in the outside boss is true vacuum and the one in the center is ported. Not sure how the GTP is set up vac wise with the TB though.

Nevermind about the airbox, forgot you were running a TU header.

The stock one is small, so am installing the only larger one I have.
I measured this one and was 53.3...if I remember right.

yea it's what the factory calls a 52mm. There's a couple 58's at the local j-yard.

I just set mine on & its like 1/2" or less from firewall. Do I have to run solid motor mounts with intake? I'm currently running a mp front motor mount.

JohnnyIroc

solid front and rear mounts will be needed for this, i kinda got nervous with how damn close it was to my firewall too.

I got mine finally working today. Throttle cable did not fit, was too short. Original was 100 inches long and the new one had to be 120 inches long. Used one from a marine shop, with lots of mods. Extending the wiring tomorrow and then test drive. Will take photos.

I would think if your mounts are all in good shape you would be fine, but the poly bushing are the way to go on any modified car in my opinion. Easier on the axles, and better 60'. ;)

Nice Johnny! I would love to see a picture of it.

I don't think anyone else will have a cable length issue. On your consulier the TB is farther away from the gas pedal. In a fwd car the TB will be closer to the pedal, so fwd cars should have alittle extra cable.
