View Full Version : What headgasket? Mopar is NLA

I've been looking for a 005 Mopar head gasket for my 86 GLHS engine before I throw it in my Omni.

But, all the Dodge dealers say they're NLA, and I can't seem to find them anywhere else.

Has Fel-Pro stepped up their game and are actually usable now? I'm not doing a crazy build, so no need for the $100 gaskets....

But, any recommendations? I'd like it to hold up a while...haha.

The 006 is still available, but I didn't think I could use that on an 86 T2....thought the GLHS engines were still T1 blocks.

- - - Updated - - -

Autozone shows the same felpro hg for all 2.2s anyhow so that's not right.

I don't see any mls ones. :/

FelPro got a bad rap over their earlier black/orange gasket. The newer silver/blue one is almost an MLS gasket. And yes, the FelPro that is available now has the crossdrill holes in it, just like the 006 gasket. You're stuck using what's available. FelPro or 006, or Cometic if you really want to go all out. Cometic is a true MLS gasket.

Fel Pro 6 months no problems

Well that's more promising. Haha. Think I might try one out. Wth. Not like the head won't have to come off again anyhow. That'll be all the more reason to make some upgrades down the road :)

But thanks guys...guess ill give the felpro head kit a whirl. I did get new bolts too. Learned from that mistake in the past -__-

Friends don't let friends use Felpro, still a shitt, soft, graphite gasket, use ROL, Corteco, Mopar or Cometic.

Buy the P4452006 if you must have the 'performance' gasket and be done with it.

What about the Permatorque though?

When I assemble my next engine I plan to use a mopar complete gasket set. Head gasket and all.

What about the Permatorque though?

I wont take sides on the debate other than to say felpro can call it whatever they want but its still a graphite core gasket, OEM is not.

The main thing is to make sure the deck and head surfaces are flat. Take the time and money to take the head to the machine shop for resurfacing.

I have run a felpro in my nitroused 10.9-11.0 Aries that also sees frequent rev limiter smacking autox runs with no issues. That tells me the fel pro is fine for the vast majority of tm's out there.

I ordered some 005 headgaskets from my dealer and got #5281064 instead. Parts guy said it is the same as 005, just under this number.
They arrived the other day and sure look the same as 005.

Pat, do you have the part number for the one you used for reference?

there has been some revisions to the felpro in the area that always used to blow out near the one outside corner near the coolant jacket. the HG steel now wraps that area completely.

This engine has 35k miles on it and doesn't need a headgasket I'm sure...lol But I'm sure its the original and thought I'd throw another in there while its on a stand before it goes in the car.

Not going to have the head done.

And ajakeski...interesting......

Can't do that, they won't work properly, if you overlay them, you'll see why.

Brian

Still leaves the other area's where they blow out/rot.

Tis true, its NOT exactly the same but 99.8% close enough.

I think it's 9296PT but I admit, the package is long gone. I looked the PN up on rock auto, which is where I think I bought it.

My brother ran the same HG on his GLHS, which he ran hard for years and on a turbo mini, which also was run hard. No issues.

Yes, 9296PT is the correct part number.

I just put a 9296PT on my CSX last month at SDAC (intake/exhaust gasket blew out on the exhaust side so the head had to come off), and so far it has held fine through a few 25-32psi drag passes and a few hundred miles of driving.

Given the improvements in the gasket over the old ones and Pat's experience, I wouldn't worry about using it.

p4452005 Has for sure been discontinued and only as of 2013. It was still in the 2012 catalog.

4387319 is what comes up for the original equipment for a 1986 GLHS which crosses to 5281064 you guys mentioned.

So.... 5281064 is the new gasket part number for the early block. Though I think I'm going to chance the Fel-Pro one, its $45 and because they have to order it from cross country it has $12 shipping tacked on it. If you're spending $57, might as well spend $99 and get the MLS one.

Amazing because I bought a 005 for $22 out the door 3 years ago :(

But wish me the best with the Fel-Pro...9262PT is the correct part number for that.

Ordered a fel pro head gasket set for $49. Gotta live employee discounts. I think she'll be fine. If not, one of them fancy jobbies with the multiple layers of steel and such and a head with some loving.

To be honest, I just want the car to move under its own power again. Haha

I have ordered multiple 1064 and 1065 gaskets and the listed price even going back 5+ years by my invoice records was always in the mid/high $30's. Online discount pricing being in the mid/higher $20's. You found an error on their system and they corrected it.

We get so spoiled with having had dirt cheap headgaskets that its easy to forget the 2.2 has been gone from chrysler for almost 20 years, 20 years and look how relatively little the price has gone up when you take into account inflation and all the turmoil the company has gone through.

Nope, was an online Mopar wholesaler/performance site, had 50 or so, he asked why I bought 20, I told him they were hard to find, right after that, the price went up. I used to get 005's from my dealer for $22.

Which areas? Take a pic of where you're talking about, because I'm pretty sure they have upgraded all those areas.

$49?? They are like 22 bucks from the parts stores! Or always were, haven't bought one in a year.

The rest of the gasket, its still graphite, doesn't take well to abuse, my technical term but its very squishy, the stock, ROL, Corteco's are a harder material, and will take more abuse before being pushed out.

Yessir. Head gasket set. Whole top end. Lol.

And yes Simon. $22 is what it cost me from the dealer 3 years ago. :/

But ok...got the set, now to get all the crap out from in front of the omni so I can move the car to get to the engine. :/ a days work in itself. Ugh.

Which is a good deal considering you get a head gasket, valve seals, valve cover gasket, intake gaskets, cam seal and cam plug, TB gasket and IIRC, fuel injector o-rings.

9296pt, the two i got from rockauto, both had big flared fire rings like 005, and the block side was all metal.
I have never blown any 005 head gasket that I replaced.
I have had the occasion once recently to try to re-use a felpro. It did not come off the engine in one piece, definitely more fragile.
I have re-used an 005 with arp's 4 times without an issue up to 25 psi. They will be missed here...
EDIT 1/11/14
I don't like the fel-pro gaskets anymore.
They may hold up to 20 psi, but replace one and it always leaves a total mess, not worth the savings.
PLUS
The fire ring material is soft in a Rick Astley (not good) kind of way...
I am ordering the 5281064 from now on.
