555/568 Quaife:

I need 3 or 4 commitments from anyone interested and then will place the order. I will have pricing details later and can pm you as soon as i know.

So you dont have to settle for obx when you know Quaife is number 1. Lets get this group buy done!

Approximate price? I would love to build a "spare" 555 with LSD and swap it in at some point, but I have not yet puled apart my old one to see what broke. Also - are the synchros available for the 555 anymore? Specifically, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

Approx price normal retail.

About $1200 + shipping.

Not sure on the synchros. But I need to find out as well.

Spares are always needed in this hobby. Never know when a part will just disappear because they don't want to make them any longer

The 3/4 synchro is common amongst all of the transmissions if I'm not mistaken. I think they're all NS1 though.

Price is set at $1250 + $50 for shipping. We are taking $250 deposits now, $250 when 1 month out and balance due before shipping. We are about 2 months out as quaife is backed up right now fufilling manufacturers requests.

I have 5 available and when they are gone you may have to wait years to get another one.

I will pm those who sent me pm's first and then fill up the remaining slots with anyone else until we reach 5.

Let the group buy begin.

When Jon gets his Slowe Speed engine he will also be a major threat.

Man - took the Shelby Z to work this morning. It was only 32 degrees. Tons of power and these tires hate the cold - even 2nd gear is useless :)

Just a question for anyone that has driven a FWD car with an LSD - how does it react when the tires break loose under straight line acceleration? Without LSD, my car is really tough to handle when it breaks loose, and I never know which way it will want to pull.

A worm gear type LSD will tend to apply power to the side with more traction so in a situation where neither wheel has grip, both will spin. With both spinning the car can drift/float to the side. The side could be to the right, for example on a crowned road, but sometimes to the left. firm grip on the wheel.

What is more fun, and needs some practice to use effectively, is how the car will pull itself to the inside of a turn under power :)

With a torque biasing diff in a FWD car, you REALLY need to have both hands on the wheel under really hard acceleration. The rule to remember is: the car will go whatever way the tires are pointing. If the car hit a bump or crown while under acceleration, it WILL go that direction! This is exactly why so many SRT-4's ended up in ditches. Once you get used to it, it's not a big deal, but you need to realize that when you ask for power, and the engine gives it to you, that you have to be ready to tell the car where to go. It can get hairy fast!

It is a VERY rewarding feeling, however, when you can set the car up for a corner, nail the gas before the apex and the car simply pulls itself around the corner. This is only possible with a FWD car that has this type of diff.

just wondering if anyone who was part of this group buy that ALSO was in the driveshaftshop axles group buy? I"ve been struggling to get my axles in and it's the diff.. wondering what was the solution to the tightness of the axles going in? there just isn't enough clearance.

jonnymopar
08-10-2015, 12:45 PM
Are they not engaging in the sun gear splines, or are they binding up in the housing?

While I wouldn't expect this from a Quaife, if it's the housing that's causing the issue, you can go at it with a brake cylinder hone. This has worked for many OBX units out there with axle fitment issues once the carrier bearings are pressed on.

Reaper1
08-10-2015, 02:33 PM
Remember on Quaife diffs you have to trim something like 1/4" off the end of the inside splines.

Also, yes, the splines can be very tight...almost to the point of needing to be "registered". I suggest busting out a file and making sure there are no burrs and the splines are straight.

I should be able to let you know soon enough. I got the intermediate shaft reassembled this evening. I have 4 bearings (input shaft and differential) to order, and several seals and I'll have a working transmission. Hopefully have it together by mid March. I'll do a test fit of the axles on the bench.
