Anyone have a V8 grand Cherokee? I sold my Isuzu and scraped up some cash, I'm thinking about a 5.2 jeep. Its not going to be my daily so no worries on fuel mileage but I'd like to know about any common issues. I know about common stuff with the 46re/rh, and front end stuff.

Common issues? Rust.

Rust, rear wipers, interior water leaks. If AWD/4WD, (and many are) the viscous coupling in the transfer is a common issue. Some elect to replace the coupling. Others swap in a beefer 2WD/4WD transfer case.

Belly Pan gasket, look down the TB and see if there is oil in the intake.

Common if the owner says it uses oil inbetween oil changes. Couple hours of work to pull the intake and replace the gasket

Edit: Repair with pictures (or swap for a Mopar M1 intake)

Transfer case is a good one. The I6 ZJ's mostly came with the manual 2WD/4Hi/4Lo transfer case. It's a bolt on to the trans and a good swap.

Yeah, kinda glad mine is a 6cyl. So far I haven't longed for more power.

Don't forget about the 96 and up had an aluminum diff that was prone to issues. My 95 Orvis had a cast iron rear diff.

Picked up a 93 v8 zj with 125k on it. Runs great and rust free. Has a 3.5" lift and a new CD player. Has a few issues, the adjustable track bar in the front has a heim joint and its loose. The shocks are shot and some other minor suspension stuff. Only drivetrain issue is that the torque converter lockup shifts in and out constantly, have to check into that but all the other shifts are solid.

Get that heimjoint fixed asap. Lifted ZJs are susceptible to Death Wobble. Consider a dropped track arm bracket.

Ordering a replacement heim tonight. The adjustable track bar has its own drop bracket but unfortunately its a crappy one that doesn't hold the Heim in double shear and moves it in the wrong plane of movement.

Figured out the transmission hopefully, noticed that cruise didn't work and tCC worked on bumpy roads. Must need a brake switch.

Headlight wiring needs some help, relays needed badly.

I have a complete Rancho 9000 shock kit for a lifted ZJ. Mine was 4" custom kit mostly Rubicon Express.
I have the remote compressor kit for the shocks too. Would possibly just need new tubing, but I think I have all of whay I used. I had the compressor under the passenger seat IIRC.

Sorry, phone died right after the pics yesterday. And the pics are blank so something happened. In any case the part numbers are:
Rancho 9116 fronts (includes the upper mount conversion)
Rancho 9112 rears

I found I don't have the remote adjust kit. When I couldn't find I remembered I think I sold it to another ZJ buddy several years ago.

Anyway if you want the 4 shocks I could bring them to SDAC if I end up making it. $25/ea. You'll need to talk to Johnny about getting some better bushings for these.
I'll dig it back out and take pics again with another phone if you are still interested.

ahh johnny joints are amazing, im using them on my 3 link build for my xj. i think the t-case in the zj is a 242 and the one you want is a 241. if you do the swap buy a shifter cable from novak-adapt.com makes life easy.

Sorry it's a 231 you want not the 241

shackwrrr

The 249 is what I have right now, AWD or 4 low only. The 242 has 2wd, AWD, 4WD, and 4Lo. The 231 has 2wd, 4wd, and 4low.

I am going with the 242, only because it has more options, the 231 and 242 are the same strength.

What's the difference in AWD and 4WD? My 4x4 dakota has a 231D in it.

AWD has a center differential allowing it to be used on dry pavement.

Yea...249 sucks. Had one in my 5.9 ZJ. The 5.9s are fun...quite fast for a Jeep. That and the luxury are all I liked about it...learned I don't like 4wd though. Too many suspensions components to need fixing.

my buddy has one that he rock crawls with 7 inch long arm from clayton, the problem he has is the dana 30 doesn't like the 5.9's power lol

shackwrrr
05-06-2013, 06:59 AM
I'm going to run it short arm for now but I'd like to upgrade eventually. Right now both axles howl a bit so I have to do something about that. There are about 5 XJs in the junkyard so a high pinion D30 is on my to do list. On the rear axle I'm unsure whether I'll use an 8.8 or try sourcing a 9". Either way its getting locked front and rear. I'm about an hour from Wellsville Ohio, and 15 min from power line park so I've got a couple places to go.

I used to fourwheel with Clayton at a couple ZJ only rides. He had done some impressive stuff with his.
Long arm kit is definitely where its at. Save money and just do it once.

What am I looking for if I look for a 242? Besides the tag that is. It'd be nice to put something else in the dak.

Am I to bring those Rancho shocks to SDAC?
Trying to see what I need to pack.

06-20-2013, 12:59 PM
Sorry I never replied, went through trying to piece a lift together with what I had. It was cheaper just go the whole lift. I went with a 4.5in ironrock off road lift so I won't be needing the shocks.
