I have painted several 2.2 blocks with Duplicolor engine enamel. I use the engine enamel primer as well and have always gotten good results. The directions on the primer can state that you should wait 10 minutes between coats. If you wait longer than an hour, you should wait 7 days before adding another coat.

Does this mean I have to wait 7 days before applying the top coat? Or can I just go ahead and top coat it within an hour of applying primer?

...looking to avoid downtime in the future.

You can topcoat when its dry "tack free". If you dont topcoat it within a couple of hours i recommend scuffing the primer before topcoating. After that it needs scuffed for the paint to adhere properly. I never understood the 7 day thing listed on spray cans and im a painter by trade LOL.
