View Full Version : How loud is the exhaust on an 08 Viper?

A friend gave me the mufflers off a Viper, they are round can's, aprox 28" long, 2 3/4" diameter pipe and I can see thru them. I am going to try one when I get my van back for shitts and giggles but I can't remember how loud the car is?

If they're stock mufflers, they're not terribly loud on a V10. With a catalyst I'd say it should be reasonably effective. Of course, it's pretty rare that I hear a 4th Gen Viper with stock exhaust anymore. Almost everyone in the club has aftermarket exhaust at this point because they say the stock exhaust is too quiet.

Should be an interesting experiment.

Vipers sound like UPS trucks for some reason, will probably work better on your van.

I think with a good exhaust they sound like a street bike.

For his next trick, Simon will make his sport bike sound like a turbo caravan! lol.

Stock mufflers are fairly quiet, I would imagine on a 4 cyl it would be even more quiet since they are design for 5 cyls. Ex. upgrades is want I've done most in my 2 yrs as a Viper tech. 50% of aftermarket ex. systems fit like a glove, the other 50% are a MAJOR PITA.

Bite your tongue.

That would hurt though

Its supposed to, :eyebrows: A Viper will never match a nice 750-1000+cc inline 4 at full song, or even a large CC twin with pipe(s).

That seems like it'd be perfect, straight thru and not loud.

Sixes and tens tend to not sound good to me. Also bikes with triples. And the oddball fives in cars like volvos. Twins, fours and eights usually have a good sound.

What year is your bike simon? I've got a stock Ti pipe with a flapper valve from a bike like yours. I thought it'd be cool to be able to dial in the flapper depending on mood.

I have a 1993 CBR900RR that's my old race bike/street bike, needs a good going over and my current racebike is a 2000 GSXR750.

Also need to keep in mind that the Vipers had four cats on them. The cats take out a lot of sound.

Viper's sound goofy because of the firing order.

I had a customer with a V10 Dodge truck, wouldn't put an aftermarket system on because they sound like crap.

I actually like the way they sound. A big cammed viper sounds awesome IMO. Our 8 valves are kind of weird sounding too.

You heard the howl of an IXIL? Its a full jiggly D cup on a skinny frame

Really? I love our engines, turbo versions anyhow, they have a nice growl to them, deep and powerful sounding, without the rice sound.

And one thing I've noticed at SDAC is that regardless of size and style of exhaust system and mufflers, all the cars share a very similar tone.

You mean to say you take all of our hard work and throw it away?

Agreed, they all seem to sound the same going down the track regardless of size or cylinder head.

It's just different from any other 4 banger I have ever heard. Give me 10 soundclips of different turbo 4's and I could pick the 8v out all day.

01 part fatigue car is noisy as stuff at WOT.Think what I don't do when I don't want to awaken the others who live nearby, or get drawn over by police, or urine off other drivers?
