Pretty sure I've seen this before but can't seem to find it. Is there a list of where all previous SDAC events took place? Any history or write ups about events such as results from events, or how many partcipated in shows, races, highlights, lowlights, etc. I saw the pics from previous SDAC events on SDAC website. Tell me there is more info than just a few pictures from the earlier SDAC events.

There really isn't much written other than what has been in past issues of Up Front. My first was SDAC-3 and I've been to all of them since. I will try to fill in some blanks and mention high points.

SDAC-1 & 2 were both held out east, in Maryland I believe. I think I've heard there were about 40-50 folks that attended SDAC-1, which was held in 1991. I'm not sure on the turnout for SDAC-2 but I think the turnout was equal to or better than SDAC-1.

SDAC-3 was the first held in the Detroit area. At that time there was a Race Rock Cafe here and we met there on Saturday evening I think. Since this was my first experience with other FWD enthusiasts, I was really impressed that so many cars from all over the country showed up for it. The parking lot was full of FWD Dodges, and Shelby's. I would guess 50-60 cars showed up. The car show on Sunday was held at the then new Chrysler Technical Center. Tours of the building were offered to us and some went (I didn't). On Monday we had a performance driving school at Waterford Hills road race track. Monday evening there was a tech session in the motel parking lot, hosted by Ed Peters. On Tuesday, we drag raced at Milan Dragway.

SDAC-4 was held in the Indianapolis area. The car show was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in an area under the grandstands. While space was tight, it meant that we were all in the shade which was nice. But the highlight was the parade lap of the Brickyard. While we were advised that a 30 MPH speed limit was to be enforced, there was also a stop for each car to be photographed when crossing the actual bricks (start/finish line). Well when each of us took off after the stop, there was about a half mile to the next car ahead of us. In an effort to 'catch up', we all floored it. Many of us saw triple digits on our speedo's by the time we caught up with the traffic ahead, which was also going fast. The Indy management sent out a bunch of official cars to pace us down. They were not amused at all.

We had a road course performance driving school at Putnam Park, and we drag raced at Muncie Dragway. Dave Zelkowski brought the "Omni From Hell" which was outfitted with the development Super 60 package. It ran a high 12 ET (12.94 ?)
and we were all wowed that such performance was now easily within reach to all of us. It would still be a few years before we saw an 11 second ET at an SDAC event. Don Landy, a former manager and legal representative for Carroll Shelby, was the guest speaker.

SDAC-5 was held in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Summitt Point was the road course and I-70/80(?) Dragaway was the drag strip used. I can't recall the location of the car show, but it was at a track I think. It was held on a grassy area behind a wooden bleacher grandstand. But that is about all I recall about it. There were a lot of 87 Charger GLHS's there and probably about 70 or so cars total. At Summitt Point was the first time I saw an Omni lift its tire off the pavement in a hard turn. DaveZ got the tire on the Omni From Hell about 8" in the air! I mentioned it to him later and he said, "Well you sure can't tell it from the driver's seat!"

SDAC-6 was held in Topeka, Kansas. We had the car show at a local airfield parking lot. Maybe 50 cars total. Both the driving school and drag racing were held at Heartland Park. We were there only a couple days after there was an NHRA national event and the entire drag strip was sticky. So much so that it felt like it would pull the shoes off your feet when you walked on it. The entire length of the strip was prepped like that. SDAC-6 was the first Hospitality Night held. It was hosted by the MidWest SDAC who provided light snacks and soft drinks (a bar was available). It was mainly to be just a social event, but started a tradition that has endured to the present.

At the driving school was the first (and only) time we witnessed a failure of a Fiberide wheel. On a hard turn, the center pulled out of the rest of the rim as the rim and tire left the car. Before the car got stopped it ground a fair sized flat spot in the brake rotor. This type of failure has been attributed to not following the torque specs (over torquing, as with an impact gun). But many sanctioning bodies do not allow composite wheels for competition because of these type of failures.

SDAC-7 was back in Detroit, but was originally planned for the western states. Miscommunication or misunderstanding led to the loss of the event for that area. But in its stead, Phoenix '97 was held. A fairly good turnout there (50 or so folks) showed that it may be possible to hold an SDAC successfully out west. But, back in Detroit, the car show was again held at CTC with about 100 cars entered. This was by far the best turnout at an SDAC so far! And for the only time, Carroll Shelby came to our event. He got there about 11 am, and stayed till about 1 pm. He walked the car show some then sat in the SDAC-GL tent and signed autographs. He sat next to me at the Great Lakes table!! Couldn't get that smile off my face for the rest of the week!

Once again we had a performance driving school at the Waterford Hills circuit, and drag raced at Milan Dragway. Chrysler brought a number of show/concept/performance vehicles to Waterford Hills for display only. At awards night Neil Hannemann, driver and engineer for Shelby at the Sante Fe Springs location, was the guest speaker.

SDAC-8 was held again in Indy. The car show was held in the parking lot of IMS and was one of the largest we've had with well over 100 cars (110-120 I think). And again there was a parade lap of the brickyard. But this time they were ready for us! We got a stern warning on the speed limit and told that anyone violating it would be escorted off the premises. They must have had about 20 or so workers in cars pacing us. But still, it was the Brickyard and even at 30 MPH, it was a thrill!

We drag raced and held the driving school at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP).

SDAC-9 was scheduled for Joliet IL. But a Lollapalooza type event was to follow us the next weekend. Britney Spears was to be the headliner there. The promoters for that event asked the track for more advance access to the track and facility so the Route-66 management notified SDAC that our days were no longer available. This happened just 2 days before we were to start. This was to be the time/place that SDAC was going to be handed over to me to manage. While the guys out east were calling everyone to tell them the event was canceled, we still made plans to meet up there to transfer the club. It was also thought that someone should be there to greet anybody that didn't get the word and showed up.

So, JohnJ and I made the trip to Joliet and met there. Only a few folks showed up at the motel as they didn't get contacted. Notably, Joey and Pat made the trip from Quebec (over 1000 miles). But the Chicago guys were still prepped for an event! Gerry B (Chryguy on here) offered to have a cookout at his place for those of us that came out. There were about a dozen of us there. It was a good time still.

While there, JohnJ and I went out to the Rte 66 track to look around. There had been a Corvette weekend just prior to us being there but it rained torrentially during their show. Four days later, when we were there, cars were still stranded by deep water. Parking lots had 4-6 inches of water on them, and the road course had many spots that had water over a foot deep. Here and there a couple cars were stranded on high ground with water 8-10 inches deep all around them. If we would have had our event there, it would have been miserable. It would not have been any fun at all. So it is just as good that SDAC-9 was canceled.

So that is the first 9 events. If you want more, just speak up. If you have questions, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to answer.

For some reason my 2 fondest memories (don't know why) was sitting in that hotel Room with Barry, Tim P, JT and Dave T (might have been another person or 2) for SDAC 9 while raining outside and being told the club was being handed over to Barry as it was supposed to me on the DL because they wanted to let the national chapter know and didn't want it posted all over the SDML

The other was 10. With them having an intrepid on the sign for us,
The construction workers trying to do burn outs with their Cat still chained to the trailer
The Pool having a fire the week before (Cleveland intimation?)
The Streaker (nothing needs to be said about a man wearing nothing but a tire and helmet)
And Barry making a new friend while being groped while passing out a set of can koosies as a door prize

SDAC-10 was the first one I planned as the new SDAC manager. The host hotel was on the west side of the Detroit in Ypsilanti Mich. I went looking for a more reasonable priced place and that turned out to be a big mistake. Besides being 'seedy' at night, the motel suffered a fire a couple weeks before we got there and the conference room and indoor pool had major smoke damage. The motel provided us with a large tent in place of the conference room, which we used for hospitality night, and for awards night. Retired Chrysler Vice President Peter Badore was our guest speaker. He spoke on the history and development of the 2.2/2.5 engine platform.

We had the car show at an airport/air museum and we parked the cars on a grassy area among historic planes, from a B-52 to early fighter jets that dated back to the Korean War. It was a great setting and we got a lot of good feedback on it. We had about 70-80 cars there. Attendance was not as good as SDAC-7 though.

For the road course driving school we went to Michigan International Speedway. The road course there was in the infield of the oval track and utilized about half of the oval where many folks would get to see what the top speed of their car was. It wasn't the best of weather though as it rained in the afternoon, and there was an accident because of the wet track.

An 87 Charger GLHS slid into a corner wall when it hydroplaned and its tires failed to grip the slick surface. The front of the car hit the wall first and then the back came around and also hit the wall. This sort of bent the car into a banana shape, totaling it, even the roof was buckled. To date that has been the only severe "off" at one of our events.

We drag raced at Milan Dragway again but even my notes from that don't mention any thing special.

Besides being in a tent, we had an unusual awards night ... we had a streaker! A guy clad with only a tire around his midsection streaked through the awards ceremony and then by lifting the back of the tire, he mooned the crowd before he left the tent.

And as Brad also mentioned in his post, someone that obviously had too many beers, came up to get his door prize, but in the process, he came around the table, threw his arms around me and kissed my neck. Then he moved his hands to my chest and gave it a little squeeze and jiggle ... yeah, definitely too much to drink! I was both surprised and embarrassed and I recall saying that anyone else that "touched" the Prez would be asked to leave. :D

SDAC-11 was very different because we left the US for our neighbor to the north. We headquartered the event in Brantford Ontario Canada. Attendance was off somewhat with only about 125 registered for the event. We had another first for an SDAC event there though, a wedding. Bob Meier was married on Saturday in a park in Brantford.

Our car show was held on a mowed grassy field at a small private park (it was called a Family Fun Center). We had about 45 cars on the field but only 34 were entered in it.

We had a road course driving school at Cayuga Raceway Park and we also drag raced there. One memorable moment from the drag racing was that Gary Donovan had to do a head gasket change during final eliminations. He did that in 20 minutes on a hot engine!

SDAC-12 was held in Memphis TN. We were amazed at the turnout there. The total participation was just under 175. There were two parking lots at the host hotel and we filled them both! It was pretty hot there for our entire event, hot and muggy. We held the car show at a park that was mostly in the sun, but had some trees along the edges. It was a rolling hilly park and was a great setting for our show. The car show was one of the largest we had while I was managing the club. We had a dozen to fifteen 87 Charger GLHS's all lined up, and many classes had 8-10 cars.

We had a performance driving school and drag raced at Memphis Motorsports Park. At the drags a number of our guys had flat tires on their left tires after running in the left lane. SDAC-12 was the first year for the Chapter Challenge drag race. While we never got the turnout for that event that we hoped for, it was entertaining to watch, and fun for the chapters to participate in. Our hospitality night was at a Chrysler Training center and they really opened the place up to us. It was a very interesting site and we didn't want to leave.

For SDAC-13 we went back to Maryland. The host hotel was in Aberdeen MD. It rained for days the week before and even on my drive out on Friday there were times near there I had to pull off the road because it was raining so hard I couldn't see. I think the rain might have kept a few folks away as we never got the turnout we had hoped for.

Our car show was held at the Durango plant in Newark Del, and we were going to hold in on their front lawn, but it was just too wet. So we used their parking lot instead. We had 60 cars entered in the show with about another 20 from local folks that never registered their cars.

We held an autocross in the parking lot for Cal Ripken Stadium. At the autocross, Brock Yates Jr. drove his dually truck through the course just to show that you can race just about anything. At the Cecil County dragway, Stephan Beauregard brought his Charger from Canada and ran the first 10 second run at an SDAC event. I mentioned that at SDAC-4 we saw our first 12 second ET. At SDAC-13 we had 72 runs in the 12's. Stephan ran the only 11 and six 10 second runs. While the car show and autocross attendance were both down somewhat, we had 65 drag racers running.

SDAC-13 was the first time we held a fun run road rally, and while there were less than 10 teams, we all had a blast and decided to try to make this a regular event.

SDAC-14 was in Chicago, well, Waukegan IL to be exact. Total registered for the event was about 140. We held the car show at a local park and shared the show with the local Mopar club (rear drive guys). This worked out well and it was the first time most of our cars were in the shade under trees. We had about 65 cars entered in the show.

SDAC-14 was our first SDAC with a movie night. A GL member brought his DLP projector and set it up on his car and used a parked semi-truck as a screen. Actually we had 3 nights where we watched movies while there. Since road course rentals had gone up so much, we teamed up with a guy that was already holding an event for Mini-Coopers at Blackhawk Farms. About a dozen of our guys went out there for the day to run on the course. It was arranged more of an open track day rather than a performance driving school.

We drag raced at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove Wisc (Da' Grove, as it is known). It was nice weather and not too hot at all. Brian Slowe's Shadow ran the quickest time of the day, an 11.001 at 128.75 before it broke. But there were a number of folks that ran 11's that day, a first for SDAC! We had about 60 drag racers there.

SDAC-15 was the first one for the Cincinnati area. A near record attendance with over 100 rooms booked by our folk at the host hotel. The hotel gave us a private wing (which we filled) with its own parking lots adjacent to it. The car show was held in a park in Kentucky and we had 93 cars entered. While the event was well attended, there wasn't much else of note that happened there. Drag racing and a fun run rally rounded it out.

Stay tuned for SDAC-16 through 20 ....

SDAC-16 was held in Topeka Kansas. As the cost of the events were going higher and higher, we were looking for a way to lower our cost of the conventions. Something that had been suggested many times by various members over the years was to combine our event with another group.

The SRT group (from SRT Forums) was planning their annual event and we were invited to join them. The event was planned to be held in Indianapolis at IRP. After quite a bit of discussion within our core group, we decided to hold our annual event with the SRT folks. The deal they offered us was that they would absorb the entire cost of the track rentals and our members that attended would be charged the same fee as the SRT folks (for the use of the tracks). We agreed to this and canceled plans to look for a site for our own event.

A couple of months into the planning for this, IRP which was now sponsored by Pontiac, declined the SRT groups offer of track rental (in which Mopar and SRT banners would be placed over the Pontiac signage). So the SRT group looked for another venue. About the only place they could find was Heartland Park in Topeka. This was not good news for us. We knew from our experience at SDAC-6 that our turnout would be very low compared to if it were held in Indy. But since we had agreed to join up with the SRT folks, and since it was now too late for us to search for a place to hold our own convention, we went ahead and made plans for Topeka.

While the events planned by the SRT folks included drag racing, a road course day, and an autocross, and even though Heartland Park was a superb venue, our attendance was low (and so was the SRT group's). We had 66 people registered and only 35 cars in the car show (held separately from the SRT show). We also got negative feedback from our members regarding the entire experience (from some that attended and some that did not).

One highlight of the event happened at the drags. Stephane Beauregard made 2 passes in the low 8's. An 8.13 at 180 MPH and the other 8.25 @ 179 MPH. These are still the fastest passes at an SDAC event.

Something else notable occurred at the end of the SRT event. Before we left the track on the final day, we found an SRT/4 hood that had been placed next to a trash barrel. We said "What the heck?" So we took it as a souvenir of the event, and we brought it to our hospitality night and everyone there signed it (by felt tip pen). Just for fun, a big laugh, type of thing.

After we were all back home, some of us were on the SRT forum and happened to mention the hood and the fun we had with it. Well the SRT folks were not amused at all. "What nerve we had!" We were accused of stealing the hood and then desecrating it by signing it. We tried to explain that we found it by the trash, and thought it too good to be put in a dumpster, so we decided to make it our souvenir.

Well they would have none of it, and for about a week accusations and arguments went back and forth on the SRT Forum. In their eyes we were scoundrels. Finally the guy that left the hood came on there to say he had bought a carbon fiber hood at the event, left his old one with the vendor with plans to have someone else pick it up and to get it back to him after returning home.

Either he didn't tell the vendor his plans or word never got passed on because as the vendor was packing his equipment up to leave he approached the guy that was in charge of the SRT event and told him someone left the hood. That guy put it in his pickup and drove around looking for anyone that knew any thing about it. Not finding anyone that knew, he put it by the trash, which was near the exit of the track, hoping the owner would see it or someone would pick it up.

The hood ended up at TurboDave's house in the Chicago area, and after all the ruckus raised on SRT Forum, Dave cleand all the writing off the hood, waxed it, and shipped it to the owner in Colorado.

SDAC-17 was held in the Pittsburgh area (New Stanton PA). Our car show was held at what was probably the most scenic park we've used yet. The show field was on a hill top overlooking a wooded valley. We had about 80 cars entered in the show, making it above average in attendance. The event itself was well attended also with registrations near the 150 mark.

The motel had a huge parking lot and we used the rear of it for "testing" our cars. Alan flew to the event and rented a 300C with the Hemi V8. In short order it was fitted with an NOS kit and was doing some amazing butnouts in the parking lot. On a couple of them the car was lost in the smoke, and there were piles of rubber over an inch high behind the rear tires when he was done. He had to purchase 2 new tires for the rear before he turned it back in as he wore the first set down to the cords.

For the fun run road rally, it was planned as a poker run. But the course the Steel City Chapter laid out was fabulous. Twisty mountain roads, beautiful parks, just a great run. It was probably about the best course and most fun we've had on them all.

We drag raced at Pittsburgh Raceway Park with Cliff Sebring again doing the race director job, but new to our event, his son Lee, announced from the starting line. It was really great. The drag racing had some surprises too. James Reeves drove his first 10 at an SDAC event. A rented Magnum brought victories to Dave Lucidi and his significant other! Rachel hadn't drag raced before and in that Magnum, she beat Angelo in a bracket race round!

At Awards Night, for the door prize drawing, we had so many items donated that we went through the tickets 3 times!

SDAC-18 was back to the Detroit area. Besides drag racing at Milan Dragway, we also had a performance driving school at Waterford Hills road racing circuit. Our car show was held at the Walter P Chrysler Museum on the grounds of the Chrysler Technical Center. We had nearly 100 cars entered in the show.

In a way the host hotel was the star of the event. It was by far the nicest hotel we've stayed at (while still offering a great rate to our folks) and the management really went out of their way to welcome us and show us they appreciated our business. And while the parking lot antics were present at SDAC's 15 & 17, they had an empty back lot that suited our use perfectly.

SDAC-19 was back to Cincinnati! We again stayed at the same hotel as for SDAC-15, but the private wing and its parking lot that we used at 15 was now closed and our folks gathered in the main lot behind the hotel. The problem was that a senior living center was next to that lot and those old folks did not appreciate smoky tire burnouts.

We set a new record for our events. The local police were called on us 3 times. And while the hotel management and the cops were understanding, it was clear that the senior citizens had the right to not be disturbed. The hotel management designated another parking area away from that main lot for "scratch outs", as they called them, but it was not level and really didn't catch on.

Overall, the event was well attended with over 160 registered. At the car show we had at least one car in every class, which is rare. We had a few folks get a little sick during the fun run road rally .... maybe a few too many beers the night before.

For the first time, we drag raced at night. Starting late in the afternoon and going till after dark, under the lights. We had 41 drag racers with 4 of them running 10's. Brian Slowe, Dean Stillie, Bruce Bender, and Mike Marra all ran 10's. And we had the quickest side by side race at an SDAC event, Brian and Dean in the Quick 8 qualifying ran deep in the 10's with both of them at over 130 MPH.

SDAC-20 was held Hagerstown Maryland. Attendance was off compared to other SDAC's with only 129 registered, and only 65 cars were entered in the car show. During the car show we held a small ceremony honoring 20 years of SDAC events and 11 participants from SDAC-1 were there to recall the first of our events.

We had an autocross there with the help of the local SCCA chapter. Just over thirty of our folks entered the autocross, and they had a great time! The night time drag racing the previous year was so popular that we tried it again. There were 3 cars in the 10's and Brian Slowe dipped into the 9's on his final run, winning the Quick 16 race.

SDAC-21 was back in ChicagoLand (Waukegan IL). Attendance was down to 120 registered, but our car show had 93 cars in it. That meant quite a few folks came out only for the car show. At the car show we celebrated 25 years since the 1986 Shelby GLHS, with a dozen of them showing up. That was the most of the 4 door Shelby's at our show since SDAC-12.

At the Drag's, Brian Slowe had fasted ET of 9.272 and only 2 other cars were in the 10's, Warren Stramer's and Jason Trotter's.

Well, that's it for the walk down memory lane folks. Hope you enjoyed it.

Great stories Barry. I was one of the locals that showed up at SDAC-13. I never heard of SDAC before and was just driving down Rt 896 past the assembly plant in my '85 GLH when I spotted a parking lot full of turbo Dodges, I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing what I saw, slammed the brakes and drove in.

Thanks a ton Barry. I assure you I got sick from riding as the passenger at 19 and not a few too many the night before. That road rally course was CRAZY. I literally tucked and rolled out of Jon Trotter's blue SC to vomit in some guy's driveway the first time we stopped. I think I laid on the median right where I got out of the car for a good half hour to 45min when we returned. It was awesome!

ETA: Was it 17 or 20 when Clay almost hit a bear on the road rally? I think 17? Myself and Joy were talking about that the other day. Actually it had to be 17 because his SRT8 was in the shop with alt problems at 20?

He was in front of us on the road rally and was almost stopped in the road. When we talked to him later and asked if he was having trouble or what, and he stated that a black bear ambled out in front of him forcing him to come to a stop.
